Abstract: A method and system for controlling air-interface resource utilization in a wireless communication system in which an access node provides service on a carrier defining air-interface resources. An example method includes monitoring a rate of voice muting on the carrier, detecting when the monitored rate of voice muting on the carrier is at least predefined threshold high, and responsive to detecting that the monitored rate of voice muting on the carrier is at least predefined threshold high, starting to apply a maximum limit on how many user equipment devices (UEs) the access node will concurrently serve with a resource-intensive service on the carrier.

Abstract: According to aspects of the disclosure, a method and system are provided for managing signaling in a wireless communication network. In accordance with the disclosure, a base station radiates to provide an antenna radiation pattern defining a coverage area, and the base station serves a UE in the coverage area defined by the antenna radiation pattern. The base station also selects, based on the determined antenna radiation pattern, a CSI reporting rate. Responsive to the selection of the CSI reporting rate, the base station causes the UE to periodically report CSI to the base station according to the selected CSI reporting rate.

Abstract: A mechanism to control transmission by a base station, which may help to control interference on an adjacent frequency. The base station is configured to operate on a first frequency and is equipped with a number of antennas enabled for transmission on the first frequency. Upon detecting of a trigger for reducing potential interference on the adjacent frequency, the base station reduces the number of its antennas that are enabled for transmission on the first carrier, which may reduce the overall energy of the base station's transmission and may thereby reduce interference on the adjacent frequency. In an example implementation, the base station could disable a proper subset of its antennas from use for transmission on the first frequency, while leaving a remainder of its antennas enabled for transmission on the first frequency.

Abstract: A method and system for controlling application of MU-MIMO. The disclosure provides for considering the quantity of data buffered for transmission over the air between the base station and each of various UEs, and selecting UEs to be subject to MU-MIMO service based on the quantity of data buffered. For example, a base station could prefer application of MU-MIMO for UEs that have more data buffered for transmission than other UEs. Or the base station could condition application of MU-MIMO to a pair of UEs on a determination that each UE of the pair has at least a threshold quantity of data buffered for transmission.

Abstract: A method and system for managing channel state reporting rate for transmission of channel state reports from a wireless communication device (WCD) to its serving base station based. The channel state reports provide metrics regarding a wireless communication channel between the WCD and the base station, and the channel state reporting rate defines how often the WCD will transmit such reports. Per the disclosure, the channel state reporting rate could be set to a higher value (for more frequent channel state reporting) if the WCD provides such connectivity and a lower value (perhaps a default value) if not, and the reporting rate could be set higher as the WCD provides connectivity for a greater number of other devices.

Abstract: A method and system to help manage a wireless client device's (WCD's) network connection with a core network gateway, where the WCD provides wireless backhaul connectivity to the core network for a relay base station with which the WCD communicates over a communication interface. The WCD detects passage of a threshold period of absence of communication on the communication interface between the WCD and the relay base station, and upon detecting that threshold period of absence of communication on that communication interface, the WCD releases its network connection with the core network gateway. Further, the WCD dynamically sets the threshold inactivity period for this purpose based on history of communications with which the relay base station has served one or more other WCDs.

Abstract: A gateway or other entity will detect when the number of relay base stations served by a relay-WCD changes and will responsively modify a configuration of a bearer that extends between the relay-WCD and the gateway. For instance, in response to detecting an increase in the number of relay base stations served by the relay-WCD, the entity could increase a guaranteed minimum bit rate and/or other quality of service level of the bearer. Or in response to detecting a decrease in the number of relay base stations served by the relay-WCD, the entity could decrease a guaranteed minimum bit rate and/or other quality of service level of the bearer.

Abstract: According to aspects of the disclosure, a method and system are provided for managing cell selection in a wireless communication network. In accordance with this disclosure, each cell in a radio access network (RAN) broadcasts a respective carrier-aggregation policy of the cell on its air interface. A UE engaging in a cell selection process reads the respective carrier-aggregation policy of each cell under consideration and selects a cell on which to attach based at least in part on the respective carrier-aggregation policies of the cells.
