Disclosed is a new process for obtaining fatty acids with improved color, odor and heat stability which is characterized in that (a) in a first step the crude acids are fed to a rectification (“precut”) column in order to remove low boiling by-products being present in the starting material as a top fraction, and (b) in a second step the bottom fraction of the precut column is fed to a sidestream column in order to obtain the pure fatty acids as the side fraction, to remove low boiling by-products which have been formed in the course of the first distillation as a top fraction and to remove high boiling by-products, either being present from the starting material or formed during the first distillation, with the residue.

Processes for preparing fatty acids are described wherein a C4-C12 fatty acid methyl ester is subjected to hydrolysis in the presence of an enzyme to form an organic phase comprising a C4-C12 fatty acid and an aqueous phase comprising methanol, wherein at least a portion of the methanol is continuously removed; and the organic phase is subsequently separated from the aqueous phase, and optionally, where the organic phase further comprises an unhydrolyzed portion of the C4-C12 fatty acid methyl ester, the unhydrolyzed portion of the C4-C12 fatty acid methyl ester is separated from the C4-C12 fatty acid.

Acylamino acids are made by a process which comprises the steps of: (1) introducing a mixture comprised of at least one amino acid or amino acid salt and an alkali source into a reaction zone; (2) adding a mixture comprised of a fatty acid halide of the formula (I): R1COX (I) wherein R1 is an alkyl or alkenyl group having from 6 to 22 carbon atoms and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine to form a reaction mixture while continuously circulating the reaction mixture from the reaction zone through a mixing zone until all of the second mixture has been added to the reaction zone. The process guarantees uniform mixing of the reaction components without the foaming observed without the use of a mixing zone.
