Abstract: An adhesion device incorporating a plurality of element block assemblies which are partially disposed within an element support body having an engagement surface. Each element block assembly may include an element activation sheet, an element deployment sheet, a plurality of engagement elements, and an element transition mechanism which is operatively coupled to the engagement elements. The element transition mechanism is configured to reversible transition from a neutral configuration wherein the element activation sheet is substantially adjacent to the element deployment sheet, and an expanded configuration wherein the element activation sheet and the element deployment sheet are separated by a transition gap. The element support body being configured while each element transition mechanism is disposed in the neutral configuration to constrain each engagement element in a deployment state wherein each engagement element disposed in a substantially straightened configuration which is substantially perpendicular to the engagement surface and which is suitable for insertion into (or removal from) a target material.

Abstract: A rotation powered vehicle drive mechanism includes an elongated chassis slot disposed within a respective lateral exterior portion of a chassis assembly. An elongated platform slot is disposed within a respective lateral portion of a platform assembly, and is configured such that it is substantially opposed to the chassis slot. The platform assembly is pivotally secured to the chassis assembly thereby allowing for rotation through a platform rotation angle of the platform assembly with respect to the chassis assembly about a rotation axis. The rotation of the platform assembly results in an increase or decrease of a variable slot height which is measured between the chassis slot and the platform slot. A cart assembly is disposed between the chassis assembly and the platform assembly, and is operatively coupled to the chassis slot and to the platform slot. The cart assembly has a cart height and is constrained by the chassis slot and the platform slot to a position on the chassis assembly wherein the cart height is substantially equivalent to the variable slot height. In this manner the cart assembly is configured to translate along the chassis assembly upon rotation of the platform assembly with respect to the chassis assembly. A helical drive shaft is rotationally secured within the chassis assembly and operatively coupled to the cart assembly such that translation of the cart assembly results in rotational motion of the helical drive shaft. A truck assembly is pivotally secured to the chassis assembly. The truck assembly includes an axle rotationally secured to the truck assembly and operatively coupled to a plurality of wheels. The axle is operatively coupled to the helical drive shaft such that rotation of the platform assembly with respect to the chassis assembly in a first angular direction results in rotation of the axle and respective wheels in the first angular direction.

Abstract: Device and method embodiments for a rotation powered vehicle are described, the rotation powered vehicle being capable of converting a rotational motion of a platform pivotally secured to the rotation powered vehicle in either of two angular directions into a linear motion of the rotation powered vehicle in a single linear direction for the purposes of conveyance. In some cases, the angular motion of the platform may be slight when compared to the resultant linear powered stroke of the rotation powered vehicle.

Abstract: Shape memory tissue engagement elements (15) are created using shape memory alloys or shape memory (SM) composite sheets (33, 36) with one or more SM material sheets (20, 32). Arrays of the tissue engagement elements may then be inserted or molded into flexible base materials forming pads for tissue engagement. In certain embodiments, the composite sheets incorporate two SM material layers (20, 32) having differing transition temperatures to allow activation of one layer for tissue engagement and activation of the second layer for tissue release. In exemplary embodiments, insertion of interconnected tissue engagement elements (46) into a base layer (19) with slots (48) provides a completed pad array. In alternative exemplary embodiments, vacuum forming of composite sheets (51) with cutting of corrugated sides (53) to form tissue engagement elements allow production of complete arrays of tissue engagement elements. Overmolding the arrays with a flexible base material (19) provides a completed pad.
