摘要: A pneumatic ground piercing tool according to the invention has a reversing mechanism provided as part of the air distributing mechanism. Such a tool includes an elongated tubular housing having a rear opening, a head assembly including an anvil, a striker disposed for reciprocation within an internal chamber of the housing to impart impacts to a rear impact surface of the anvil for driving the body through the ground, an air distributing mechanism for effecting reciprocation of the striker, and a tail assembly mounted in a rear end opening of the housing that secures the striker and air distributing mechanism in the housing. In one embodiment, the outer bushing of the valve sleeve can slide a short distance relative to the air supply tube and has an intermediate radial port which selectively communicates with the air supply conduit. The valve sleeve also includes a detent mechanism for securing the air supply tube in its forward or reverse position. A biasing device such as an resilient tube biases the detent mechanism to an unlocked position when the compressed air is off, and is overcome by air pressure so that the detent assumes a locked position when the compressed air is on.

摘要: The invention provides a method for reversing an impact boring tool of the type having a reversing mechanism actuated by rotation of the compressed air supply hose that enters the tool through a rear end opening. This method includes the initial step of connecting the air supply hose to the tool using a quick-release coupling device including tubular male and female members which are coupled together, one of the members being mounted on the end of the air supply hose and the other mounted on an air inlet conduit of the tool, the coupling device further having a locking sleeve and a ball seated in a first pit in one of the members and configured for insertion into a second pit in the other of the members as the locking sleeve moves over the ball, the locking sleeve being biased to a locked position wherein the ball is seated in both pits thereby preventing rotation of one member relative to the other as well as disengagement of one member from the other. The tool is then operated for earth boring, the direction of travel of the tool is then reversed by rotating the air hose, which rotation is transmitted to the air inlet conduit of the tool by the ball of the coupling device.

摘要: The invention provides an apparatus and a method for installing a pipe in a pre-bored hole. According to one aspect of the invention, the apparatus comprises a plug having a rear cylindrical portion with external threads engaged with internal threads of a front portion of a plastic pipe section. A front portion of the plug includes a pulling attachment, and a rear portion of the pipe section extends beyond the rear portion of the plug for attachment to a pipe to be towed through the hole. According to another aspect of the invention, the apparatus comprises a plug having a pulling attachment at a front end, a rear portion with external threads, a lengthwise external cutaway portion on the rear portion, and a slot extending radially through the rear portion. The lengthwise external cutaway portion forms an edge for cutting into an interior surface of a plastic pipe and the slot forms a suitable collection space for collecting pieces of plastic cut from the interior of the pipe by engagement of the threads. The invention also provides an apparatus and method for simultaneously installing several underground pipes in a pre-bored hole. This apparatus comprises a mounting plate having a generally flat plate including a plurality of spaced, crucifix-shaped openings extending through the plate. Several pulling devices can be secured to the mounting plate by sliding a plurality of chains, each chain attached to one pulling device, into one of the openings.

摘要: Methods and apparatuses for producing a planar cavern are provided. The planar cavern is formed by first creating a continuous bore that extends through a subsurface resource deposit. The drill head used to create the bore can be steered in response to information about the concentration of the resource in the strata through which the drill head is passing, in order to keep the bore within resource deposit. The continuous bore can be formed by connecting first and second bores at a point within the subsurface resource deposit. After the continuous bore has been formed, a sawing assembly is placed within the continuous bore. The sawing assembly is then moved, in a continuous or in a reciprocating fashion, within the continuous bore. As the sawing assembly is moved, it is maintained under tension, to create a planar cavern. By thus exposing a large area of the resource deposit, a relatively large amount of the resource deposit can be dissolved in a solvent introduced to the planar cavern per unit time. Saturated solution can then be pumped from the planar cavern, and the resource recovered from the saturated solution by evaporation.

摘要: A method of replacing an existing underground pipe, especially a sanitary sewer line, uses a boring machine that advances a drill string of hollow rods through the existing pipe. The method includes the steps of mounting a rotary cleaning tool on a distal end of the drill string, moving the cleaning tool progressively through the underground pipe while rotating the drill string in order to clean the inside of the pipe, flushing debris loosened by the cleaning tool from the pipe using a pressure fluid, removing the cleaning tool from the drill string and mounting a camera assembly on the distal end of the drill string, moving the camera and drill string through the underground pipe on the drill string and inspecting the inside surface of the pipe with the camera, removing the camera from the drill string and replacing it with a pipe destroying apparatus, moving the pipe destroying apparatus through the pipe to destroy the existing pipe, and then installing a replacement pipe along the same line as the destroyed existing pipe. This permits a single piece of equipment, such as a directional drill rig, to perform several different functions as part of the pipe replacement process.

摘要: An impactor for use with a directional boring machine for replacement of underground pipes includes a bursting head having a rearwardly opening recess and a front end opening that communicates with the recess. An inlet pipe is connected at its front end to a distal end of the drill string and extends into the recess of the bursting head through the front end opening. A striker is mounted for sliding movement along the inlet pipe, and a distributing mechanism responsive to pressure fluid supplied through the drill string and inlet pipe causes the striker to reciprocate in the rearwardly opening recess of the head to deliver forward impacts against the bursting head. The striker and distributing mechanism are mounted in a tubular housing, and a pulling connection is provided by which the impactor can be pulled by the drill string while the striker is delivering impacts against the head in the same direction as a pulling force exerted by the drill string. The bursting head is preferably slidably mounted on the inlet pipe and moves forward relative to the inlet pipe and drill string in response to an impact of the striker against the bursting head. The impactor can be readily used with existing directional boring machines.

摘要: A method is provided for removing an expander from a ground piercing tool of the type having an elongated tubular tool body with a front nose and a striker disposed for reciprocation within an internal chamber of the body to impart impacts to an impact surface for driving the tool forwardly through the ground. The expander is tightly fitted onto the nose of the tool body. The method of the invention uses a pulling device comprising a pair of arms ending in hooks and mounted at ends opposite the hooks to a yoke having a threaded hole therethrough, and a screw including a threaded stem inserted through and threadedly coupled with the hole. Suitable means are provided for engagement with a device for turning the screw. The method according to a first aspect of the invention includes the steps of positioning the hooks of the pulling device in engagement with a pair of rearwardly facing shoulders on the expander, positioning an end of the screw in contact with the nose of the tool, and tightening the screw against the nose of the tool using the turning device on the engaging means, thereby exerting a pulling force through the arms sufficient to disengage the expander from the nose of the tool.

Such a tool can be used to install an underground pipe by welding a front end of the replacement pipe coaxially to a rear end of the plastic tube, operating the tool over a run to pull the pipe into the ground, and when the tool has reached the end of the run, disconnecting the tool from the replacement pipe.
