The cable linkage is provided with a displacement transmitting mechanism which includes an input element operatively connected to a front lateral bar in the front wheel steering mechanism through the cable linkage, an output element operatively connected to the rear wheel steering mechanism, and a spring element disposed between the input and output elements to transmit displacement of the input element to the output element without any deflection in a condition where the output element is freely movable and to absorb displacement of the input element in a condition where the output element is restrained by an excessive load applied thereto from the rear wheel steering mechanism.

The shift control arrangement includes a support shaft horizontally mounted on a vehicle body structure for rotation about a first axis, a manual shift control lever having a lower end mounted on the support shaft for rotation about a second axis orthogonal to the first axis, a drive bevel gear integrally mounted to the lower end of the control lever for rotation therewith, a pair of axially spaced driven bevel gears mounted on the support shaft for rotation therewith and being in meshing engagement with the drive bevel gear, and a pair of power take-off bevel gears rotatably mounted on an upstanding support shaft secured to the vehicle body structure and being in meshing engagement with the driven bevel gears, the power take-off bevel gears each having an arm portion for connection with each of the push-pull cables.

A tiltable shift lever assembly for operating a transmission of a vehicle, including a shift lever disposed between a driver's seat and a front passenger's seat, so as to extend generally upward when placed in its operative position. The shift lever is supported pivotally about a first pivot axis substantially parallel to a transverse direction of the vehicle. The shift lever has an upper portion having a knob, a lower portion operatively connected to the transmission, and a coupling connecting the upper and lower portions such that the upper portion is pivotable, about a second pivot axis substantially parallel to a longitudinal direction of the vehicle. A fixed guide member is disposed above the coupling of the shift lever, and has a guide slot formed in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. The upper portion of the shift lever extends through the guide slot, and is guided by the guide slot for a pivotal movement of the shift lever about the first pivot axis. The guide member further has a lateral slot formed so as to extend in the transverse direction from one longitudinal position of the guide slot. The lateral slot permits the upper portion of the shift lever to be pivoted about the second pivot axis until the upper portion is placed in a substantially horizontal position thereof.
