    摘要: Provided are a method and apparatus for making a cigarette filter assembly for potentially reducing particle breakthrough. The method includes forming a lofty porous network of charge retaining polymer fibers by mechanical, chemical or thermal bonding of the fibers, wrapping the lofty porous network in a cylindrical or tubular shape with optional mediating filter fibers in a filter paper to form a filter plug while maintaining the lofty structure. The charge retaining fibers can be charged to attract and hold particles from such sources as particulate matter from sorbents (preventing break-through), and smoke constituents while having a suitable pressure drop. The apparatus handles the lofty media with minimal crushing, for example, by spacing apart delivery rolls equipped with protrusions to punch, push, and/or pull the lofty media ahead for high speed operation.

Modification of cellulose acetate fibers may be performed at various stages during the manufacture of cigarette filter plugs. Furthermore, cigarette filter plugs containing modified cellulose acetate fibers can also have spaced apart slits along the length of the cigarette filter plugs.

    摘要: An improved oil conditioning filter, for use with an internal combustion engine, includes a mechanically active filter element and a chemically active filter element having a reactive basic conditioner therein. The reactive basic conditioner is provided to counteract acidic combustion products in lubricating oil in an internal combustion engine. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the chemically active conditioning agent is provided in a plurality of pellets disposed within the oil filter housing. The pellets may be bonded together to form an integral porous filter element having spaces defined between the pellets thereof. The pellets are made of a mixture including a polymeric binder and the chemically active conditioning agent, in a defined weight ratio and in a narrow range of particle sizes. The chemically active filter element reacts with acids present in the oil to form a product which may be filtered out of the oil. The pellets are made either by a hot extrusion process or by a solvent process.

    摘要: A battery separator, for placement between conductive plates within a battery, includes a non-woven fiber mat made up of one or more nonwoven fibers, which have a specific cross-sectional shape and exhibit a microcapillary action. The fibers are preferred to be made of a thermoplastic selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, fluoropolymers, polyimides, polysulfones, polyesters, polyamides, and mixtures thereof Each of the fibers includes an outer surface, a hollow internal cavity, and an extended slot. The hollow internal cavity communicates with the outer surface by way of the extended slot. Capillary forces within the fibers are greater than those on the fiber surface, such that a liquid electrolyte readily moves through the interior of the fiber via a wicking action. As a result, the battery separator tends to direct fluid to adjacent battery plates even when an electrolyte level, within the battery, drops below the tops of the plates.
