    Abstract: A MOTOR VEHICLE INCLUDES A TRANSVERSELY EXTENDING HINGED COWL PANEL ADJACENT THE LOWER EDGE OF THE WINDSHIELD FOR CONCEALING THEREBELOW THE WINDSHIELD WIPER ARMS AND BLADES WHEN PARKED. THE HINGED COVER OR COWL PANEL IS MOVABLE FROM A CLOSED POSITION WHEN THE WIPER ARE PARKED TO AN OPEN POSITION WHEN THE WIPERS ARE OPERATING. A FLUID PRESSURE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR OSCILLATES THE WIPER ARMS AND BLADES THROUGH A LINKAGE TRANSMISSION. THE MOTOR INCLUDES AN AUXILLARY LINEARLY RECIPROCATING DRIVE SHAFT FOR MOVING THE COWL TO OPEN POSITION WHEN THE WIPER MOTOR IS STARTED BEFORE THE ARMS AND BLADES MOVE OUT OF PARKED POSITION AND TO CLOSED POSITION WITH THE WIPER MOTOR IS SWITCHED OFF FOLLOWING MOVEMENT OF THE WIPER ARMS AND BLADES TO A DEPRESSED PARK POSITION. THE LINERALY RECIPROCATING DRIVE SHAFT IS COUPLED TO THE HINGED COWL PANEL THROUGHT A RELEASABLE COUPLING ASSEMBLY WHICH CAN BE UNCOUPLED TO PERMIT MANUAL MOVEMENT OF THE COWL PANEL TO AN EXTREME OPEN DETENT POSITION FOR ACCESS TO THE EQUIPEMENT STOWED THEREBELOW. THE COUPLING ASSEMBLY IS PROVIDED WITH AN INTERMDIATE DETENT POSITION FOR RETURNING THE COWL TO A POSITION TO PERMIT WIPEROPERATION IN CASE OF FAILURE OF THE COWL RETRACTING MECHANISM.

    Abstract: A windshield wiper blade and arm assembly in which the blade comprises a pressure-distributing superstructure including a number of pivotally connected levers and a flexible backing strip for retaining a rubber squeegee element. The superstructure and backing strip is enclosed by an envelope of rubber or rubberlike material with a squeegee element extending exteriorly thereof. A heating element is disposed in heat exchange relationship with respect to the envelope and is connected to a source of electrical energy through a detachable connection exteriorly of the rubber element. An electrical conductor extends from the above-mentioned connection along the length of the wiper arm to a connecting terminal on the cowl of a motor vehicle.

    Abstract: A windshield wiper arm includes a mounting head having a mounting head cover or retainer enveloping the mounting head and pivoted thereto. The retainer may be pivoted to the mounting head with portions of its sidewalls straddling the mounting head. A pair of compression springs recessed in the mounting head bear against the web of the mounting head cover to urge the arm against a windshield of a motor vehicle. Alternatively, an exposed mounting head may be employed wherein a tension spring spans the pivotal connection. A recess in the mounting head receives a pivot shaft drive burr in driving engagement. A latch pivoted to the arm head engages the edge of one flange of the mounting head cover in the installation position. In the latching position the latch underlies the drive burr to retain it in the recess. Additional forms of latches comprise a lever transversely slidable on the mounting head, manually slidable to a position where a portion engages either a longitudinal edge or an edge at the end of the flange of the arm head cover member or retainer to maintain the arm in an installation attitude. In the latching position a portion of the lever underlies the drive burr retaining it in the drive burr recess of the mounting head.

    UNIT AND THE LATCH VENTS THE SYSTEM TO PERMIT RETURN OF THE DIAPHRAGMS IN BOTH THE LATCH UNIT AND THE POWER UNIT. A MANUALLY OPERATED CONTROLLER SELECTIVELY PORTS VACUUM TO THE SERVO-VALVE AND ALSO SERVES AS A SWITCH FOR THE HEADLAMP ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT.
