摘要: The present invention includes an Ethernet frame switching system for receiving and transmitting data frames from and to a plurality of ports. The frame switching system includes a plurality of port control units for managing the transmission and reception procedural processes with a physical layer device. The frame switching system further includes a queue management unit (QMU) connected with data buses to the port control unit. The data frames received from or transmitted to the port control unit are managed by the QMU that these data frames received are transmitted directly to and data frame for transmission or retrieved directly from a single shared data frame buffer such that the local data frame buffer is not required in each of the port control units. Without these local data buffers, the QMU applies a novel link list queue management process to complete the writing and reading of data frame for transfer over the data bus in a single time-division multiplexed time slot such that no loss of data frame occurs. The data frame queue management further include a special technique for managing the broadcast frames by employing a broadcast frame counter together with the link list management scheme. The first-in-first-out order is maintained in combination with the unicast frames without requiring multiple data frame storage slots for the broadcasting frames such that high through put of frame switching is achieved without imposing additional memory requirements.

摘要: A first physical layer (PHY) device includes an auto-negotiation module, a first cable-length measuring module, and a first control module. The auto-negotiation module exchanges data rates of the first PHY device and a second PHY device. The first PHY device is connected to the second PHY device by a cable. The first cable-length measuring module performs a first measurement of a length of the cable. The first control module selectively receives a second measurement of the length of the cable from the second PHY device, and selects a data rate of the first PHY device from the data rates of the first PHY device and the second PHY device based on (i) the first measurement of the length of the cable performed by the first cable-length measuring module of the first PHY device, or (ii) the second measurement of the length of the cable received from the second PHY device.

摘要: Reduced power transmission is described. In embodiments, networked devices communicate via a network connection. A characteristic of the network connection between the networked devices can be determined, and an output amplitude of a signal that is indicative of the communications between the network devices can be adjusted based on the characteristic of the network connection. Power consumption that is utilized for the communications between the network devices is reduced based on the adjustment of the output amplitude of the signal.

摘要: Aspects of the present disclosure provide for a cable tester that tests a cable to determine the cable length. The cable tester can include a clock generator that generates a clock that has clock period that is a multiple of the data symbol period and a signal generator that injects the training signal, which can be synchronous with the clock, into the cable. The cable tester can also include a receiver that samples the returned signal from the cable and adaptively filters the returned signal based on the training signal and a controller that determines the cable length from the adaptive filter tap coefficients.

摘要: A physical layer (PHY) device of a network device includes a first module, a first cable-length measuring (CLM) module, and a first control module. The first module determines whether a remote PHY that communicates with the PHY device over a cable is capable of measuring a length of the cable. The first CLM module measures a first length of the cable. The first control module causes the first length to be transmitted to the remote PHY, receives a second length of the cable measured by the remote PHY, and adjusts an operating parameter of the PHY based on at least one of the first and second lengths.
