Polarity of mode constant of the resonance filter is so determined as to stabilize a vibration mode brought about by the resonance filter on the basis of a relation between the frequency stabilized by a control system and the phase-180° crossover frequency. Positioning accuracy at a specific frequency can be enhanced without involving unstability in the control system even in a frequency range where sensitivity function of the control system is higher than 0 dB inclusive.

According to the invention, there is provided a carriage arm assembly including a carriage arm having two arm members. The arm member is constructed in such a way that the width of its coil side end and the width of its suspension side end are narrower than that of its intermediate area. This construction widens a servo band width, improves positioning accuracy, and reduces positioning errors of a magnetic disk apparatus, so that recording density is improved and storage capacity is increased. Further, by coupling two arm members using a restriction member via a visco-elastic member, it is possible to achieve a high damping effect on various vibration modes including in-plane bending of the arms, and suppress vibration of the carriage so as to reduce the positioning errors.

A track locus drawn on a disk discretely contains repeatable runout (RRO) components which are large in amplitude up to high-frequency band. In order to position a magnetic head along the track locus using filters good at suppressing RRO with resonance characteristics only at an integral multiple of a rotation frequency, many filters are required and thus it takes a long time for all the filters to go into a steady state. After learning until the filers go into a steady state, output values of the filters in a steady state are stored on a disk or in a memory. According to controlling the magnet head using these stored output values, the time required for the filters to go into a steady state becomes unnecessary.
