    Abstract: CMC with CMDS greater than or equal to 0.76, optionally with a non-ionic co-thickener or a CMC with CMDS less than 0.75 is used as both the rheology modifier and partial clay substitute in tape joint compounds. This significant reduction of clay level is sufficient to eliminate most of the negative characteristics of clay in joint compound.

    Abstract: Water demand in an aqueous joint compound composition is increased by incorporating a blend of water soluble polymer (WSP) and crosslinked polyacrylic acid water demand polymer (WDP) with a WSP to WDP blend ratio of 9:1 to 25:1. A preferred WSP is hydrophobically modified hydroxyethylcellulose. This blend may also be used for aqueous tile adhesives.In the joint compound the thickener, comprising water-soluble cellulose ether(s) and water-insoluble but swellable polyacrylic acid or salt thereof, the acrylic component gives increased joint compound viscosity without the need to decrease water level or increase thickener level.

    Abstract: A mortar cement composition is composed of a cement or ground portland cement clinker, ground limestone and/or lime, sand, a sufficient amount of water to render the composition flowable, and at least one water-soluble polymer present in the amount having a lower limit of about 0.001 wt % and an upper limit of about 0.04 wt % based on total dry weight of the ingredients, with the proviso that the extent of adsorption of the polymer onto the cement is less than 50%, and wherein the resulting mortar has 8-16% air content and greater than 70 psi flexural bond strength. This mortar cement composition is for use in building structures in all seismic zones.

    Abstract: An aqueous fluidized polymer suspension is comprised of at least 20% by total weight of the suspension of at least one member selected from methylcellulose, methylhydroxypropylcellulose and methylhydroxyethylcellulose having a bulk density of 0.30 g/ml or greater dispersed in an aqueous solution of at least one salt dissolved therein. These suspensions have many industrial uses; for example, they can be used for joint compound manufacture, tile cement thickening, food additives, adhesives, and in many other water based systems.

    Abstract: An improved joint compound is provided that has from about 0.2 to about 0.9% of a thickener system selected from unborated hydroxypropylguar or a blend of an unborated hydroxypropylguar and 1-3% of a cellulose ether. This thickener system is either in dry form or as a fluid suspension. This joint compound is useful for the installation of wall board paneling in residential commercial, and industrial buildings.
