摘要: In a digital FM receiver having a demodulator that receives a radio signal and generates therefrom a phase sample whose behavior determines an output of the demodulator, an apparatus for removing a low-frequency interference signal from the phase sample converts the phase sample into a frequency sample which is then high-pass filtered to produce a filtered frequency sample. The filtered frequency sample is then converted into a filtered phase sample, which may be further demodulated in accordance with known techniques. Converting the phase sample into a frequency sample may be performed by a first order difference circuit. Converting the filtered frequency sample into the filtered phase sample may be performed by an integrator. Because the demodulator may produce degraded performance when the inventive apparatus is applied to a radio signal that does not have low-frequency interference, in another aspect of the invention the demodulator is further provided with a circuit for detecting the presence of the low-frequency interference signal in the radio signal, and alternatively selecting, in response thereto, either the filtered or original phase sample to be supplied to further demodulation circuitry.

摘要: A method and system for demodulating received signals in radio communication systems. Pi/4-DQPSK modulated signals can be demodulated to provide additional quality measurements and to facilitate diversity combination or selection. For example, a carrier is modulated with digital data using Pi/4-DQPSK to convey two bits of data by changing the radio carrier phase from the value at the end of the last symbol through an angle of either .+-.45 degrees or .+-.135 degrees, these four possibilities representing the bit pairs 00, 01, 11 or 10. The transitions of the radio signal are filtered in the complex (I,Q) plane to limit the spectrum. At the receiver, the received signal is downconverted, filtered and amplified using a hard-limiting intermediate frequency (IF) amplifier. The IF amplifier also produces an approximately logarithmic indication of the signal strength before limiting. The hard-limited IF signal containing phase information is fed to a direct phase digitizer. A numerical value representing instantaneous phase is produced and processed to demodulate data symbols. The demodulated data symbols can be combined with the logarithmic signal strength information to produce quality-annotated data bits to an error-correction decoder.

摘要: A robust automatic frequency control (AFC) loop for use in radio frequency systems performs a threshold test on the accumulated error adjustments for controlling a frequency oscillator. Based on this test, the loop adjusts the value contained in the error accumulator to allow the receiver to remain locked to a desired frequency carrier even in the presence of a strong adjacent channel interferer. The AFC loop is designed to be used in error systems where the predetermined fixed carrier spacing. Assuming that the initial frequency error is never exceeded by one-half the carrier spacing, the system can determine if the wrong channel has been locked to if the oscillator in the AFC loop is corrected by more than half the carrier spacing. Through use of a threshold test on the accumulative oscillator correction, the AFC loop can determine if the receiver has locked to an adjacent interfering channel. Having determined such a lock has occurred, the oscillator can be adjusted by plus or minus one channel, thus reestablishing connection of the AFC loop to the desired channel.

摘要: A first wireless link between a communication device and a wireless modem is automatically established, so that electronic messages can be easily and automatically transferred between the communication device and a data network via the first wireless link and a second link between the wireless modem and the data network. Each of the communication device and the wireless modem can automatically determine whether an electronic message is to be transferred. When one of the communication device and the wireless modem determines that an electronic message is to be transferred, the determining one of the communication device and the wireless modem sends a page signal to the other one of the communication device and the wireless modem. When the other one of the communication device and the wireless modem receives the page signal and responds, the first wireless link is established. The electronic message is then transferred between the communication device and the data network via the first wireless link and the second link. The communication device can be a portable computer such as a laptop computer, and the wireless modem can reside in a cellular or personal communication system (PCS) phone or the like.

摘要: A mobile telephone able to save power in response to the position of the mobile telephone is disclosed. Location circuitry within the mobile telephone enables the establishment of one or more deep-sleep locations associated with a mobile telephone. When the location circuitry determines that the current location of the mobile telephone is within a selected distance of one of the deep-sleep locations, the mobile telephone operates according to a low power mode of operation wherein only a timer enabling periodic updates of the mobile telephone's position is active. If the location circuitry determines that the mobile telephone is not within a selected distance of one of the predetermined locations, the mobile telephone operates in a standby mode which utilizes more power than the deep-sleep mode but still conserves battery power and enables the mobile telephone to receive calls.
