Abstract: A compact, low-profile, in-line beveling tool suitable for use in a confined space, such as a tightly packed array of tubes. The tool is inserted within a workpiece via a feeding mechanism, such as a worm gear arrangement, and is secured to the workpiece via an internal expanding mandrel assembly. A motor drives cutting inserts, mounted on a beveling head, in rotational motion to bevel the workpiece. The motor and beveling head with cutter inserts all share the same axis. A gear reduction box, located between and operatively connected with the motor and beveling head, provides the low RPM and high torque needed to make practical use of carbide insert technology. In one embodiment, the motor is a hollow core air motor having vanes symmetrically arranged about the axis.

Abstract: A removable debris shield and method to internally protect a portion of a vessel, such as a pressure vessel, during fabrication. Pliant material sufficient to span a desired interior portion of the vessel has a hem located around the periphery of the material and having at least one opening. A hoop is removably inserted through the opening into the hem to extend the material across the desired interior portion of the vessel. In one embodiment, a spreader bolt spreads the hoop to force it tightly against the walls of the vessel.

Abstract: A method and apparatus in a steam generator that employs tube support plates within a shroud that is in turn disposed within a shell. The tube support plates are made of a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion lower than that of the shroud. The tube support plates are aligned during fabrication, with minimal clearances between components. Using a tube support displacement system, a controlled misalignment is then imposed on one or more tube support plates, as the steam generator heats up. Displacement to produce misalignment is produced only when the steam generator is heated. The tube support plate displacement system has only two parts, a spring bar and a push rod, that are internal to the steam generator shell and threadably engaged, thereby minimizing the potential of loose parts. The tube support plate displacement system can be used to provide controlled misalignments on one or more tube support plates, in the same or varying amounts and directions, and with one or more apparatus being provided for any individual tube support plate.

Abstract: A hydraulic expansion mandrel for expanding tubes in a heat exchanger tube bundle into a tubesheet is formed from a non-metallic material, such a carbon fiber-reinforced material.
