The surface of a web is monitored by a fault detection system (20), a machine condition monitoring system, a quality measurement system, a web moisture measurement and/or a web temperature measurement and the soiled part of the surface of the roll is detected and localized by means of a soiling monitoring apparatus (31, 35; 60). A control system (41) controls a cleaning device (40) to remove the detected soiling. As a web (W) travels in a paper or board production or finishing process or in finishing machinery the web and/or the surface of the roll is monitored and after a detected deviation the surface thereof is momentarily spread with a liquid while machinery is running at the same time as the web (W) travels over said roll surface.

A fibre web is conveyed through the closed roll nips of the calenders. The intermediate rolls (3) have load-relieving means and the upper roll (3; 30) and the lower roll (3; 40) have loading means, while loading means are connected to the lower roll (3; 40) and/or the upper roll (3; 30) for loading these rolls from the outside in a direction parallel with the calender plane. The running parameters (9) influencing the calendering impulse of one or more selected roll nips (N) are intermittently or continuously changed, such that the overall calendering impulse (9) of the calender or calender array and/or the quality variables (21) of the fibre web remain substantially constant and/or within predetermined limits.

An apparatus for cleaning the surface of a backing roll in a coater or a calender roll, wherein the roll is cleaned by spraying water on it and then scraping the water away from the surface or the roll with a doctor blade. Splashing of the water accumulating in front of the doctor blade is prevented by a rubber sheet extending down close to the tip of the blade, or alternatively, using a guide blade mounted in front of the doctor blade. The rubber sheet preceding the doctor blade isolates the water pond formed in front of the doctor blade from the surface of the roll, so that the rotational movement of the roll cannot induce turbulence and splashes.
