By activating the catalyst composed of rhodium in combination with palladium and/or platinum supported on the carbon support after the hydrogenation, the conversion to the hydrogenated product of aromatic polycarboxylic acid is maintained at nearly 100% even after repeatedly using the catalyst many times. Also, a hydrogenated product of aromatic polycarboxylic acid substantially free from the starting aromatic polycarboxylic acid is obtained.
