The attribute information of the 3D image is recorded in each of hierarchized management information files as an attribute in units of management data of each of the management information files. When a coding method is a frame sequential method, frame identification data indicating whether each frame is a left-eye image (L image) or a right-eye image (R image) are recorded; and when the coding method is an inter-view reference coding method where any one of L and R images is referred to during decoding, base image identification data indicating which one of the L and R images is a base image are recorded. Thereby, a playing apparatus can determine an attribute of a frame without performing analysis of data to be played.

A flag that represents whether a play item has a multiple angle structure of which the play item is reproduced with a plurality of angles is described. In addition, a flag that represents whether the beginning of each decode unit is an angle switchable point is described. In a seamless multiple angle structure, the current angle can be switched without need to increase the number of interleave units. In a nonseamless multiple angle structure, with the flag, in a predetermined region on the rear end side of each angle, the current angle is prohibited from being switched. Thus, when a play item exits from the multiple angle, discontinuity in the reproduction can be prevented. In addition, with a flag that represents whether a sub play item should be reproduced not in synchronization with a main path, the sub play item of only audio data can be used as a BGM.

A method of coding a 3D image included in data to be recorded in a recoding medium is determined; attribute information to be recorded in a management information file is changed according to the determined coding method; and attribute information unique to each coding method is recorded in the management information file. For example, if the coding method is a frame sequential method, frame identification data indicating whether a frame constituting the 3D image is a left-eye image or a right-eye image is recorded as the attribute information. A playing apparatus acquires information unique to the coding method from the attribute information, so a decoding process corresponding to the coding method can be performed without error.
