A direct conversion transmitter comprising two local oscillators, an in-phase and quadrature modulating signal and in-phase and quadrature modulators, adds a leakage detector and corrective algorithm with one or more digital to analog converters to generate a corrective signal. The corrective signal corrects for, minimizes, and suppresses local oscillator carrier leakage into the transmitted signal. In accordance with the invention, direct up transmitter carrier leakage is automatically measured at regular intervals during the transmit cycle. A DC correction, or a correction waveform as a function of time, is input to both the “in-phase” and “quadrature” modulators at the baseband input. The two correction signals are tuned according to a minimization algorithm to achieve the lowest possible carrier component in the spectral output of the transmitter at its ambient operating conditions and present power output level. As the ambient conditions, such as temperature, and transmitter power level changes, the two correcting input DC currents, or correction waveforms, are further tuned towards the optimal values for that operating condition. Optimization is accomplished by an adaptive feedback technique employed to achieve maximum carrier suppression.

Baseband receiver circuitry is dynamically biased in a communication system receiver by generating gain control information, and controlling an adjustable bias of at least a portion of the baseband circuitry based at least in part on the gain control information. The baseband receiver circuitry comprises at least one amplifier having an adjustable bias associated therewith, with the adjustable bias of the amplifier being controllable utilizing a bias control signal. For example, the amplifier may be an operational amplifier having a gain stage and an output buffer stage, with the bias control signal being applied to the output buffer stage to control an adjustable bias current thereof. More specifically, the bias control signal may be used to control an amount of current provided by at least one of a plurality of current sources associated with the output buffer stage of the amplifier, for example, by controlling a switch which enables or disables one or more of the current sources. Advantageously, the dynamic bias control can substantially reduce power consumption in the receiver. The techniques of the invention can also be applied to other types of devices which utilize gain control.

Disclosed is an integrated circuit having a plurality of combinations of an integrated unit capacitor connected in series with a controlled channel of an integrated transistor switch. The series-connected capacitor and switch combinations are connected in parallel and the switches include a control gate coupled to a bit output of a register via a control line. In this manner, the capacitance of the variable capacitor depends on what word is stored in the register. Control gates for a different number of capacitor and switch combinations are connected to each bit output, and the numbers are weighted using, e.g., a binary weighting scheme. The variable capacitor is coupled to a balanced signal line pair, with capacitor and switch combinations comprising a switch connected between two capacitors that are connected to a line of the balanced signal line pair. Such arrangement is highly linear and even order distortion is reduced. The disclosed integrated circuit arrangements reduce the sensitivity to noise on the control line of the device. Variations in voltage applied to the control line and thus to the control gate of the switch vary the resistance value of the switch when closed, yet affect the value of the capacitive portion of the impedance very little. The disclosed capacitors are useful in circuits that need to be accurately trimmed once (e.g., filters) and in circuits in which variable capacitance is required, such as voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs).
