Adhesive compositions comprise thermoplastic polyhydroxyethers of the formula (-D-O-E-O-)n, wherein D is the radical of a dihydric phenol D(OH)2, E is the hydroxyl containing radical of an epoxide and n is at least 30, and a poly-(vinyl alkyl ether). The compositions may also contain an organic solvent and may be prepared by milling the two components or blending solutions of the two components. Thermoplastic polyhydroxyethers are prepared by reacting equimolar amounts of bisphenol A and either epichlorohydrin or the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A or an equimolar mixture of epichlorohydrin and butadiene dioxide in the presence of NaOH in a H2O/EtOH/butanol mixture. After initial reaction at room temperature and then at 80 DEG C. a toluene/butanol mixture is added and the heating at 80 DEG C. is continued. More toluene/butanol and some phenol are added and after further heating the mixture is cooled and toluene/butanol added. Water is added and the upper organic phase separated, washed, acidified and washed, and then the polymer is precipitated by i-propanol.
