Abstract: Vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers are stabilized with (1) an acid-accepting colourcompatible primary stabilizer and (2) a mercapto-substituted aliphatic polybasic acid or condensation product thereof with a polyhydric alcohol. Specified mercapto acids are thiomalic, mercaptoglutaric and mercaptoadipic acids, and specified polyhydric alcohols are ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. (1) May be organotin compounds, e.g. dibutyl tin dilaurate, dibutyl tin maleate and dibutyl tin laurate maleate, alkaline metal salts, e.g. sodium carbonate, trimagnesium phosphate and calcium stearate, and epoxy compounds, e.g. glycidyl oleate, diglycidyl ethers of diphenols and glycidyl sorbate dimer. Plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, fillers, pigments, dyes, ultra-violet light-absorbing agents, densifying agents and other additives, e.g. stearic acid, may be incorporated. Specified comonomers are vinyl acetate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl benzoate, vinyl ethyl ether, vinyl chlorethyl ether, vinyl phenyl ether, vinyl methyl ketone, vinyl phenyl ketone, acrylonitrile chloracrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, vinylidene chloride, 1-fluoro-1-chloroethylene, allylidene diacetate and chlorallylidene diacetate. In Example III a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and vinyl chloride-2-ethylhexyl actylate copolymer is stabilized with dibutyl tin laurate maleate and thiomalic acid.
