    Abstract: A method and an apparatus are disclosed for the fabrication of tampon applicator tubes in which thin-walled tube blanks are supplied, without damage, by a feeder mechanism to a tube forming unit which shapes the forward end of each tube, in a sequence of operations including crimping, folding inwardly, exercising to weaken the folds to facilitate ejection of the tampon, and refolding. The tubes are resiliently carried by tube supports mounted on a first, intermittently rotatable turret and are positioned to be acted upon substantially simultaneously by a set of dies carried by a second turret reciprocably mounted to advance and retract to and from tube engaging positions. Both outer and inner tampon applicator tubes may be formed in this manner by utilizing appropriately shaped tube supports and dies. After shaping the forward ends, the tubes are transported to a machine which applies and bonds a ring to the outer tube near the rear end thereof. Bonding is accomplished by gluing the ring to the outer surface of the tube with a suitable adhesive deposited in drops by an extrusion means.

    Abstract: A three-ply, laminated tube structure for use in the fabrication of tampon applicator devices or the like typically comprising an external tube for carrying the tampon and an internal, tamponejecting tube slidably received in the external tube. The tube structure is particularly advantageous for use as stock material in the manufacture of external applicator tubes of the type having a folded, tapered forward end which opens by unfolding during ejection of the tampon. The structure includes a glazed tissue inner ply having a relatively high fold endurance, a thin outer ply made of high quality, high strength paper having an extremely smooth coating on the exterior surface, and a relatively thick intermediate ply of short-fibered, porous, blotter-type paper having negligible fold endurance and interposed between and bonded to the inner and outer plies by a brittle, water soluble adhesive. The rear extremity of the external tube is provided with a reenforcing and gripping ring made from relatively heavy tube stock. The internal, tamponejecting tube of the applicator device may be formed from three ply tube stock similar to that used for the external tube.

    OVER THE EXTERIOR SURFACE OF THE EXTERNAL TUBE FLUSH WITH THE REAR EDGE THEREOF. THE RING IS THEN BONDED IN PLACE BY INDUCTIVELY HEATING THE FOIL TO HEAT THE THERMOPLASTIC RESIN AND FUSE THE RESIN TO THE TUBE SURFACE.
