Abstract:
A quaternary ammonium base or salt thereof with a weak acid or betaine is incorporated in a vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride copolymer in which the vinylidene chloride comprises 10-25 per cent by weight. The mixture is then subjected to heat, pressure, or both. The quaternary ammonium compound or betaine is present in from 1-10 per cent by weight and those specified are trimethyl benzyl ammonium hydroxide, triethyl benzyl ammonium hydroxide, tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide and dimethyl ethyl benzyl ammonium hydroxide. Weak acids specified are oxalic, formic acetic and benzoic. Other substances which may be added are plasticisers, such as dibutyl sebacate, methoxyethyl oleate, dioctyl phthalate and tributyl phosphate; a phenol-aldehyde resin such as cresol, phenol, xylenol and resorcinol with formaldehyde and phenol-furfural; fillers such as magnesium oxide, magnesium carbonate, sodium carbonate; pigments such as carbon black; and lecithin. The powdered or granular copolymer is milled with about a quarter of the amount of total plasticiser on a hot mill, followed by the remainder of the plasticiser at a short interval, pigments and fillers are then added and the mass cooled. The quaternary ammonium compound is then added, followed by thorough mixing. Curing is carried out on the sheeted material at temperatures about 300 DEG F. Pressure may be used.
