Abstract: A network device includes memory with permanent storage. A request for information is received from a user device. In response to determining that an erasure encoded version of the requested information is not stored in the memory of the network device, the requested information is requested to be transmitted from a storage external to the network device and partially received. In response to determining that an amount of the partially received requested information does not satisfy an erasure encoding threshold, it is determined whether the erasure encoding threshold can be satisfied within a time duration. If so, the partially received requested information is erasure encoded, stored in the permanent storage, and transmitted. If not, the requested information is requested to be retransmitted from the storage external to the network device.

Abstract: Embodiments of network devices for content distribution are described. In some embodiments, an edge network device integrates network coding for content distribution with erasure coding for data storage. Embodiments of methods of integrating network coding and erasure coding are also disclosed. In some embodiments, an edge network device can determine content distribution and storage for content based on one or more penalty functions that assess storage capacity, computational power, user demand, and/or network bandwidth for optimal resource usage. In some embodiments, an edge network device creates fragments of content and transmits a subset of the fragments for early distribution. In response to a user request for the content, the edge network device can transmit the remaining fragments to the user device for the user device to reconstruct the original content.

Abstract: A data storage system includes a plurality of Data Storage Devices (DSDs). A write command is sent to each DSD of the plurality of DSDs to each store one or more erasure coded shards of an overprovisioned number of shards. The overprovisioned number of shards is generated from an erasure coding on data to provide at least a predetermined level of data reliability. Write complete indications are received for a threshold number of shards less than the overprovisioned number of shards, with each write complete indication indicating that one or more shards of the overprovisioned number of shards has been stored in a DSD. It is determined that the data has been written with at least the predetermined level of data reliability after receiving write complete indications for the threshold number of shards, but before receiving write complete indications for all of the overprovisioned number of shards.

Abstract: A Data Storage Device (DSD) includes a Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) for storing data, a network interface for communicating on a network, and a processor. According to one aspect, a command is received via the network interface for storing data in the NVM. A data writing methodology is dynamically selected for how the data will be physically stored in the NVM from among a plurality of data writing methodologies based at least in part on whether the command is to be performed using a first interface or a second interface for accessing data in the NVM. According to another aspect, respective storage capacities of the NVM and/or respective rates of consumption of different types of storage media in the NVM are assigned to the first interface and to the second interface.

Abstract: A disk media retaining and exchange system configured to accept a disk media assembly including a disk and a ferromagnetic material coupled therewith, includes a spindle motor assembly with a spindle motor and a permanent magnet retainer coupled therewith, whereby the system is configured to retain the disk on the spindle motor by a magnetic force between the ferromagnetic material of the disk media assembly and the permanent magnet retainer of the spindle motor assembly. An electromagnet disk exchange tool may be employed, configured such that energization of coils in close proximity to the disk media assembly overcomes the magnetic force to release the disk media assembly from retention with the spindle motor assembly, and generates another magnetic force between the ferromagnetic material of the disk media assembly and at least one electromagnet of the exchange tool to remove the disk away from the spindle motor for disk exchange.

Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to a tape drive comprising a tape head and control circuitry. The tape head comprises a plurality of data elements, each data element including a write transducer and a read transducer. The control circuitry is configured to control the tape head to write at least three different frequency preamble tones prior to writing data to data tracks of a tape. A different preamble tone is written to adjacent data tracks of the tape. The data elements of the tape head are each configured to read one or more preamble tones prior to writing data to or reading data from the tape. The control circuitry is then configured to extract a signal content from each preamble tone read by each data element, and determine an optimized positioning for the tape head with respect to the tape to reduce alignment errors.

Abstract: A Data Storage Device (DSD) includes at least one disk for storing data in a plurality of storage areas including at least a first area type for using a first data access methodology and a second area type for using a second data access methodology. It is determined whether to perform a command in a storage area of the first or second area type. If the command is to be performed in the first area type, the command is prioritized over at least one other command for the second area type. In another aspect, a value is determined representing a number of data access operations within a predetermined time period for a data storage capacity of the DSD. Storage areas of the DSD are configured as one of at least the first area type and the second area type based at least in part on the determined value.
