    摘要: A portable computer is contained within an outer metal case which physically encapsulates and protects the working components of the computer in the closed, portable configuration. The metal case includes a base which serves as a heat sink for transferring waste heat from heat producing electrical components to the surroundings in the open, operating configuration of the computer. The heat producing components are mounted and located in the base to maximize the transfer of heat to the base. A display housing is pivotally mounted on the base by hinge assemblies for swinging movement between a closed and latched position on the base and an upward and rearwardly inclined angle for viewing by an operator positioned in front of the computer. Stop pins coact with the hinge assemblies for holding the display housing at the desired angle of view, and torsion springs are associated with the hinge assemblies for preventing inadvertent slamming of the display housing against the base during closing. Electrical cables are guided from the base through the hinge assemblies and to the display by cable guides which protect the cables against snagging and unnecessary flexure. A single connector connects an audio circuit on a modem to use either a standard hand set for voice communications or a passive speaker and microphone as an acoustic coupler for data communications.

    摘要: A network adapter for a synchronous logical ring network operates on existing physical twisted-pair telephone topologies. Information propagates around the logical ring, reaching every device on each revolution around the network. Network devices are full-duplex, transmitting and receiving information on every clock cycle. Network devices arbitrate to be elected the network clock device. By synchronizing all network devices to a single reference clock, and providing fixed frames of information propagating around the network at consistent time intervals, the logical ring network ensures that information propagates from one device to another at consistent time intervals. The fixed-length frames are divided into two independent streams: a data stream for the distribution of real-time continuous digital media streams; and a system command stream for the distribution of system commands.

    摘要: A method and a system for audio communication between a plurality of users at a plurality of sites utilizes a set of audio input sensors at each site. Each set of audio input sensors binaurally senses an auditory space in proximity thereto. A metaphorical representation of each of the sites is provided. Each metaphorical representation has a position which is variable within a metaphorical space. The metaphorical representations can be based upon, for example, a physical metaphor, a visual metaphor, an auditory metaphor, or a textual metaphor. The auditory space sensed at each site is combined to form at least one synthetic auditory space. The at least one synthetic auditory space is formed in dependence upon the position of each metaphorical representation within the metaphorical space. A binaurally perceivable auditory environment is produced at one or more sites based upon the at least one synthetic auditory space.
