An optical system for coupling a laser radiation source to a circularly symmetric single-mode optical fiber. The laser radiation source produces a beam of light having an elliptical mode field. The input end of a coupling fiber, which has a core that is elliptically-shaped in cross-section, is situated in light receiving relationship with respect to the source. The coupling fiber is oriented with respect to the source such that the mode field of the source is aligned with the coupling fiber core to provide the most efficient coupling of light from the source to the fiber. Means such as an evanescent coupler couples light from the output end of the fiber to the circularly symmetric fiber.

To couple the elliptical mode field light beam of a laser radiation source to a circularly symmetric single-mode optical fiber, the end of the fiber is provided with an anamorphic lens. The double wedge-shaped lens provides high coupling efficiency and is easily constructed. Other anamorphic lenses are also disclosed. A single wedge lens can provide high coupling efficiency if it is formed on the end of a coupling fiber which has a core that is elliptically-shaped in cross-section, the line of intersection of the two surfaces forming the lens being aligned with the major axis of the elliptical fiber core.

A multi-channel swept wavelength optical interrogation system and a method are described herein that enable the interrogation of one or more biosensors which for example could be located within the wells of a microplate. In one embodiment, the optical interrogation system comprises: (a) a tunable laser that emits an optical beam which has a predetermined sequence of distinct wavelengths over a predetermined time period; (b) a distribution unit that splits the optical beam into a plurality of interrogation beams; (c) an array of optical interrogation units that receive and direct the interrogation beams towards an array of biosensors; (d) the array of optical interrogation units receive a plurality of reflected interrogation beams from the array of biosensors; (e) a data processing device that receives and processes information associated with the reflected interrogation beams to determine for example whether or not there was a biochemical interaction on anyone of the biosensors.
