    摘要: A sensing method and apparatus using photonic band gap multilayered material. Photonic band gap multi-layers are formed from alternating layers of higher refractive index and lower refractive index materials, and may be deposited or disposed on a optically transparent substrate or a reflecting face of a prism. Light is directed into the prism, directed to the photonic band gap multilayer, and reflected out of the prism, where it is captured and analyzed. Various sensor configurations keep light wavelength or coupling angle fixed, while monitoring the change in the other parameter. Also disclosed is a microarray configuration with an array of probe spots placed on one surface of the multilayer, which is mounted on an x-y translation stage.

    摘要: A packaged core is obtained using a conventional core barrel system. A lining is provided in the core sample container of the core barrel. The core barrel is connected to a drill string extending into a borehole. As the drill string is rotated, the core sample moves into the sample container and inside of the lining. When the core barrel arrives at the surface, the sample core may be removed from the core barrel packaged in the lining. The core may be examined on site or the ends of the lining closed and the core completely packaged for shipment to the laboratory.

    摘要: The decontamination of PCB-containing transformers to obtain treated transformers containing less than 50 parts per million (ppm) polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) can be achieved using a method wherein the transformer is initially drained of all PCBs; then the core/coil assembly is removed. The internal surfaces of the transformer are then cleaned using a solvent. Finally, a new core/coil assembly is installed. The method is simple and can be completed within a substantially shorter period of time than methods known in the art.

    摘要: Nitrate-polluted run-off water from a field is conveyed via land drains to a reservoir. The reservoir is large enough to contain excess quantities of storm water from the field. From the reservoir, the run-off water enters a tank which contains wood or other organic carbon material. The wood is kept under water, i.e. under anaerobic conditions, whereby the nitrate is broken down by bio-chemical action. Sufficient wood is provided, and the flow rate is so adjusted, that the nitrate-polluted water spends many hours in contact with the wood.

    摘要: A manipulator joint includes an encoder having a body and shaft. The encoder body may be fixed to a first housing and the encoder shaft may be fixed to a second housing. The second housing is separate from, distal to, and rotatable with respect to the first housing. Rotation of the second housing may be about a common axis shared with the first housing. A hollow driveshaft, rotatably coupled to the second housing, extends across the joint from the second to the first housing. A torque limiter may be fixedly coupled to the second housing and releasably coupled to the driveshaft. The encoder may be configured to output an absolute angular position of the first housing with respect to the second housing. A method of detecting an over-torque condition of the manipulator joint includes transmitting commands from a processor to the drive motor and receiving data from the encoder.
