An apparatus for performing measurements on a plurality of light waveguides comprises an arrangement for coupling distinguishably fed optical signals into each of the waveguides and measuring each of the distinguishable signals from the waveguides by using flexural couplers. In one embodiment, the distinguishable signals are obtained by utilizing modulated signals of different modulations, or different frequencies. In another embodiment, the signals are sequentially applied in a chronological order to the waveguides and are separately evaluated.
Abstract:
For identifying the local distribution of light waveguides in two groups to be aligned to one another, the groups are displaced at least once relative to one another transversely relative to the longitudinal axes of the light waveguides to be investigated in at least one plane. The chronological curve of the intensity distribution of the light coupled from the one group into the other group during the displacement is identified and evaluated. For optimally aligning the waveguides with two groups, an intensity distribution for each group is obtained and the distributions are compared to find an alignment which produces a maximum overlap. A splicing operation may be then conducted with the groups thus aligned, and the same technique can then be used to control the splicing as well as to check the quality of the splice.

A cassette which serves the purpose of connecting and branching light waveguides has a reserve length thereof for each of the waveguides deposited in the cassette in either a figure eight or circular or oval pattern. To accomplish this, the cassette is formed with upstanding holding devices which enable winding the waveguides in a figure eight pattern or in a circular pattern, or both. A plurality of the cassettes can be interconnected together to form a cassette block which can be opened hinge-like. To interconnect waveguides in one cassette with the other cassette, each of the cassettes is provided with an opening in a floor of the cassette and a portion of the side wall midway along the longitudinal side wall, which side wall is positioned adjacent a hinge interconnecting the cassettes together.

A method and apparatus for measuring the attenuation of optical medium utilizing a transmitter and a receiver arranged on each side of the medium. In the method, two-measurement series are acquired in succession and the reception signals thereof are derived both from the series using reception signals from both the right and left-hand transmitters on a first receiver, while the second receiver is uncoupled. Then, a second series is performed with the second receiver coupled in and the first receiver uncoupled.

During an initial pressure application on a light waveguide with a coating, which waveguide is subjected to a flexional coupling, deformation of the coating will occur and the value of an outfed light from the light waveguide will change as the deformation changes. The final intensity of the outfed light is obtained during the deformation of the coating by a process of extrapolating the final value from the initial measured values occurring during the initial deformation of the coating.

A method and apparatus for measuring the optical attenuation of optical mediums characterized by a first transmitter and a second receiver being connected to one output of the optical medium and the second transmitter and first receiver being connected to the other output. Thus, four measuring processes can be obtained, which include measuring the signal from the first transmitter after it passes through the optical medium by the first receiver, measuring the signal from the first transmitter in the second receiver before it passes through the optical medium, measuring the signal from the second transmitter after it has passed through the optical medium by the second receiver and measuring the signal from the second transmitter by the first receiver before it passes through the optical medium. These four values are then processed to determine the exact attenuation of the optical medium.
