Abstract: A locking web retractor includes a spool mounted between side walls of a frame and rotatable in web take-up and pay out directions, and a locking apparatus including a toothed wheel rotatable with the spool, a movable component and a lock pawl. The movable component moves between a locking position in which it forces an engagement end of the lock pawl into engagement with the toothed wheel to prevent the spool from rotating in the web pay out direction, and an unlocking position in which the movable component does not force the engagement end of the lock pawl toward the toothed wheel. The lock pawl defines a counterweight at an opposite end and configured, in the unlocking position of the movable component, to cause the lock pawl to move in a direction which draws the engagement end of the lock pawl away from the toothed wheel.

Abstract: A seatbelt retractor assembly includes a disk having a cam surface and a cam follower surface. A lever that engages the cam surface when the lever is in a disengaged position and engages the cam follower surface when the lever is in an engaged position. Abstract: A seat belt system for motor vehicle applications incorporating a dual retractor restraint system with a portion of the seat belt webbing having a locally thick segment such as an inflatable seat belt portion. The dual retractors include electrically controlled actuating clutching mechanisms which operate to maintain the inflatable belt portion in a desired position relative to the upper torso of the seat occupant without requiring the inflatable belt portion to pass through the system D-ring or latch tongue or a high mounted retractor. When the occupant is donning the belt, the shoulder retractor is locked and the webbing is extracted from the lap retractor. Once the tongue is latched into the latch plate, the lap retractor is locked and movement of the occupant is permitted by allowing extraction of webbing from the shoulder retractor.

Abstract: A load management system and method for controlling the activation sequence and times of activation of motor vehicle occupant restraints when a high g event, such as a crash, occurs. The system includes a microprocessor that processes inputs from a number of devices including seat weight sensor, an occupant spatial position detector, a buckle status detector, a belt sensor. The microprocessor is driven by a load management procedure that includes a high g event routine that controls the activation sequence of restraints so that the automatic locking restraint is first activated, followed by the pre-tensioner and then by the air bag. The load management procedure also includes an enable/disable procedure that controls the enabling and disabling of the restraints according to a number of variables including occupant weight, seat buckle status and belt extension status.
