摘要:
A UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) is used to interface serial data signals, and is provided to associate with a micro-processor in a micro-processor unit. The micro-processor unit is required to save consumption of power, if employed in such devices as a handy terminal device or the like. The micro-processor unit that can save consumption of power includes a microprocessor having a core section, which performs an arithmetic operation, and a universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter section operatively connected to the core section of the micro-processor. The universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter has a first circuit for receiving an asynchronous serial data signal, which is composed of a start bit, a stop bit and data bits provided between the start and stop bits. The first circuit also detects the start bit. Also included in the universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter is a second circuit for setting a flag indicating that the asynchronous serial data signal is being received when the start bit is detected by the first. When the micro-processor detects that the flag is set, stops the supply of clocks to the core section in a sleep mode.

A speech detection circuit includes an amplifier for amplifying an input audio signal and having a variable gain, a rectifying circuit for rectifying an output signal of the amplifier, a comparator for comparing an output signal level of the rectifying circuit with a reference level, and a control circuit for outputting a control signal based on an output signal of the comparator. The control circuit outputs a control signal which indicates a power save mode after a predetermined time elapses from a time when the output signal level of the rectifying circuit becomes less than or equal to the reference level, and outputs a control signal which indicates a normal mode immediately when the output signal level of the rectifying circuit becomes greater than the reference level. The amplifier receives the control signal output from the control circuit and reduces its gain when the control signal indicates the power save mode.

The present invention relates to a mode-switchable telephone and mode setting and switching methods for the telephone. The mode-switchable telephone has a comparing unit which compares a value of a ringer adjusting volume with a volume value for setting a second mode, and a control unit which switches a first mode to the second mode when it is determined based on the result of the comparison by the comparing unit that the value of the ringer adjusting volume is set to be equal to or less than the volume value for setting the second mode. This structure facilitates the operation of the telephone having an automatic answering/recording function and a simple pager function.
