    Abstract: A solid state television-type image display device includes a panel of strain-responsive semiconductor material whose absorption edge in the unstrained condition is at a first predetermined wavelength, but in response to strain the absorption edge moves to a second predetermined wavelength shorter than the first. Transducer means are provided for repetitively scanning the panel with acoustic energy of a magnitude sufficient to cause movement of the absorption edge, and an intensity modulated source of light of a wavelength equal to the first predetermined wavelength is placed in registration with the panel and is intensity modulated with gray scale information. In another embodiment, three such display devices are stacked in registration with each other in order of decreasing absorption edge wavelength, to provide for full color image production.
