    Abstract: A color cathode-ray tube assembly comprises a hollow envelope that has a neck section enclosing an electron gun apparatus for developing three electron beams and further has a funnel section a portion of which encloses a beam control electrode in the form of a shadow mask disposed across the path of the beams to achieve color selection. The beams are shielded from interfering magnetic fields by a shield formed of a pliable foil of magnetic material. This foil is positioned and secured upon the aforesaid portion of the funnel section and is patterned to conform to the contour of the funnel so as to be in magnetic coupling relation to the shadow mask. The foil supplants the aquadag coating heretofore applied to the outside surface of the funnel to serve as the grounded electrode of a filter capacitor for the high voltage power supply which energizes the tube.

    Abstract: A color television receiver is of the type which includes a cathode ray tube having an image screen composed of luminescent dot triads distributed in a raster pattern. Each triad has dots individually productive of respective red, green and blue colors. An electron gun produces a delta array of three electron beams to excite respectively assigned ones of the dots on the screen. Two of the electron beams are aligned in the horizontal direction while the third is displaced in the orthogonal direction. The usual yoke assembly is provided on the neck of the cathode ray tube for producing horizontal and vertical scanning fields that deflect the beams over the raster pattern in order to define the image. At the same time, the yoke assembly introduces astigmatic distortion in the electron beam array as the beams are deflected toward edges of the raster. Also included is a system which tends to maintain convergence of the electron beams upon the dot triads throughout action of the deflection means. To compensate the astigmatic distortion, at least the third beam is subjected to a pair of correcting fields that are spaced opposed in the horizontal direction on opposite sides of the third beam and serve mutually to aid movement of that third beam in the orthogonal direction; in most embodiments, the correcting fields also act upon the other two beams. The correcting fields are developed in response to a waveform which includes at least a component that varies parabolically at the rate of change of the horizontal scanning field; ideally, the waveform also includes a parabolic component that varies at the vertical scanning rate. Together, the correcting fields function as a dynamic purity control.

    Abstract: Apparatus for effecting asymmetrical top and bottom pin cushion correction in a television receiver includes a core of saturable magnetic material upon which a signal winding and a control winding are physically oriented at right angles in order to preclude inductive coupling therebetween. An auxiliary winding, formed as an extension of the control winding, is positioned upon the core adjacent the signal winding and in an inductive coupling relation thereto. The signal winding is included in the output circuit of the vertical output stage. The control winding, which is energized from the horizontal output stage, cyclically varies the saturation of the core to modulate the vertical sweep signal flowing in the signal winding. This modulated signal is modified by a horizontal frequency component inductively coupled to the signal winding by the auxiliary winding. The inductively introduced horizontal component adjusts the relative peak amplitudes of the modulated vertical sweep signal to produce an asymmetrical vertical pin cushion correction which emphasizes beam deflection at the beginning of the sweep while attenuating beam deflection at the end of the sweep.
