    Abstract: This disclosure depicts cathodo-luminescent devices and luminescent panels employing X-Y matrices of such devices as the display elements. The cathodo-luminescent devices are depicted as each comprising a two-section cell containing an ionizable gas at very low pressure. The first section comprises an electronmultiplier serving as a controllable source of free electrons. Free electrons are drawn from the electron-multiplier and accelerated in the second section to high energies whereupon they collide with a light-emissive phosphor screen. Other structures including means for modulating the flow of electrons to the screen are disclosed.

    Abstract: THE SCREEN IS COVERED WITH A WATER-SOLUBLE COATING MATERIAL COMPRISING A NEGATIVE PHOTOSENSITIVE RESIST AND AN INHIBITOR TO RENDER THE RESIST UNRESPONSIVE TO ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT. AN ADDITIVE, SUCH AS DYE THAT MAY BE BLEACHED OR ACTIVATED BY EXPOSURE TO A VISIBLE LIGHT WAVELENGTH, IS ALSO INCLUDED IN THE COATING TO COUNTERACT THE EFFECT OF THE INHIBITOR WHEN ACTIVATED BY EXPOSURE. THE SCREEN, COATED WITH THIS MATERIAL, IS FIRST EXPOSED TO THE VISIBLE RADIATION FROM ONE COLOR POSITION AND THROUGH A SHADOW MASK HAVING APERTURES LARGER THAN THE PHOSPHOR DOTS OF THE SCREEN. THE SCREEN IS THEN EXPOSED TO ULTRAVIOLET, AGAIN THROUGH THE SHADOW MASK BUT FROM A SECOND COLOR POSITION AND RESULTS IN ELEMENTAL AREAS OF THE COATING MATERIAL, WHERE THE TWO EXPOSURE PATTERNS OVERLAP, BEING RENDERED INSOLUBLE.     Abstract: This disclosure depicts methods and structures for applying a very thin layer of electrically conductive, light-reflective metal such as aluminum to the phosphor screen of a cathode ray tube. More particularly, there is disclosed the application of such a metal layer by the transfer of a metal layer formed on a substrate directly to a phosphor layer on the inner surface of a cathode ray tube faceplate. The metal layer is adhered to the phosphor layer by an adhering step which may involve the use of a pressure-sensitive adhesive. In one embodiment disclosed, the substrate is then stripped off; alternatively, the substrate may be removed by dissolution or volatilization. Remaining volatile substances are driven off in a baking operation. Other associated and alternative operations are depicted.

    Abstract: A color cathode ray tube includes an in-line or delta cluster of electron guns each having an improved electron focus lens. The electron lens provides reduced spherical aberration when compared with prior art electrostatic lenses having similar diameter. The lens establishes an essentially saddle-shaped axial potential distribution V0. A plurality of coaxially and contiguously disposed electrodes have a distribution of potentials applied thereto which is highest on the end electrodes and lowest on an intermediate electrode, decreasing gradually from both end electrodes to said intermediate electrode. The lens provides an axially continuously active, stray-field isolated focusing field.
