摘要:
In a disc drive with a disc spun by a motor and a head positionable over the disc, a disc drive controller alternately leaves the head landed on successive landing spots in a landing zone on the disc for selected stop intervals to remove an increment of lubricant from the head with each stop and then automatically lifts the head by spinning the disc for selected run intervals between the stop intervals so the head does not stick to the disc.

A slider for supporting transducer elements for a data storage system including at least one pressure relief trench formed in the raised bearing proximate to a contact interface position of the slider and disc surface. The trench is sized to reduce capillary pressure of the meniscus relative to disjoining pressure of a lubricant film layer on the disc surface to limit the area or expansion of a film bridge or meniscus between the bearing surface of the slider and disc surface.

Non operational shock resistance is achieved by preventing separation of the read/write head from the disk. Embodiments include optimizing the normal stiction force of a lubricant topcoat by controlling the texture geometry of the landing zone and lubricant topcoat thickness, particularly the density of protrusions. Laser textured landing zones having a protrusion density above about 4,500 protrusions/mm.sup.2 can provide an optimal normal stiction force in excess of 25 gf per interface and a lateral stiction force below 10 gf per interface.

A slider for a data head including a dynamically imbalanced slider landing integrated pad interface (SLIP interface) forming a predicted tipped interface. For contact starts and stops the SLIP interface supports the slider so that the slider tips toward the predicted tipped interface. The predicted tipped interface includes a tribological surface to provide desired stiction control at the tipped interface.

A disc storage system includes a rotating disc and a transducer. The transducer is carried on a slider which is supported by an armature. The armature is used to move the slider radially across the disc surface whereby information may be read from or written to the disc surface of the transducer. The slider includes an air bearing surface which faces the disc surface. As the disc rotates, the air bearing surface causes the slider to “fly” over the disc surface. Pads are provided on the air bearing surface to improve operational characteristics of the system. For example, the pads may be used to reduce the stiction or improve flying characteristics. Flying instabilities associated with the pads are addressed by a number of characteristics provided to the air bearing surface.

A reader and a method of fabricating a reader having a thermally isolated magnetoresistive element is disclosed. The method includes fabricating a magnetoresistive read transistor between a top shield and a bottom shield. The magnetoresistive read transistor is then coated with a thermally isolating material. The magnetoresistive read transistor can be coated with a zirconia compound such as zirconium diboride. For additional thermal isolation, a layer of diamond-like carbon can be deposited over the thermally isolating material.

An abrasive article is provided. The article includes (a) a flexible backing having opposing first and second surfaces; (b) an abrasive layer comprising plurality of abrasive particles disposed on the first surface of the flexible backing; and (c) an adhesive layer comprising load bearing particles and an adhesive matrix, the adhesive layer disposed on the second surface of the polymer layer. At least a portion of the load bearing particles is substantially enveloped in the adhesive matrix and is in contact with the second surface of the polymer substrate.
