A generally constant force resilient device urges a base portion of the latch into the inward or engaged position with a container. In accordance with the present invention, the sprockets and rails with spaced openings are replaced with spaced longitudinally extending trolley rails on opposite sides of the car and rollers riding thereon supporting the bulkheads. In cross section, the shape of the roller is such that the bulkhead becomes largely self-aligning. The rail can readily be manufactured with available parts relatively inexpensively. Since the rollers are not interconnected a wide range of manufacturing and other tolerance variations can be tolerated. A bulkhead locking member is engageable with longitudinally spaced locking means to hold the bulkheads in a desired position in the transportation vehicle. A wide variety of geometrical arrangements and cross-sectional shapes for the supports, trolley rails and rollers may be used to obtain the self-aligning capability.

Also mounted on the shaft is at least one locking cam. Upon rotation of the shaft to move the locking means into engagement with the gate, a locking cam engages the surface of a rigid member, deflecting the shaft and then locking the cam in place to hold the locking means in engagement with the gate. A railway car hopper outlet for either gravity or pneumatic unloading includes an inclined wedge shaped gate, which is mounted on upper and lower rollers for limiting tilting of the gate during opening. A pneumatic discharge tube extends along the lower edge of the gate in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the movement of the gate so that the gate in its closed position guides the lading toward the pneumatic tube. The pneumatic tube has a rotatable valve adapted to open at and above the lower edge of the gravity gate for receiving lading. For gravity operation, the rotatable valve is left closed and the gate only is moved longitudinally. For pneumatic operation, the gate is left closed and only the valve is opened.

In a railway car, such as a closed hopper car, conditioned by circulated air, condensation may occur near the roof, which is difficult to insulate effectively. The conditioning air, which may be heated air, is fed into the bottom of the hoppers and exhausted at one end of the car. A shielding stream of electrically heated air admitted at the other end of the car near the roof flows along the roof and prevents moisture laden circulated air from striking the cold roof directly, and thus prevents condensation. A portion of the circulated air is exhausted to atmosphere to facilitate the inflow of fresh air, and thus increase the oxygen content and reduce the humidity when the car contains oxygen consuming, moisture emitting lading.

A pneumatic bulkhead assembly for a railway box car suspended by flexible support means from the upper portion of the box car. The bulkhead assembly includes upper and lower bulkhead sections each of a height generally around one-half the height of the car and mounted on the flexible support means in a vertically spaced relation to each other with the lower bulkhead section mounted for a limited resilient movement relative to the upper bulkhead section. Each bulkhead section includes a pair of generally flat faces and a pneumatic bag between the faces to urge the faces outwardly upon inflation.
