A filter media is supported on filter support housing between the flow aperture and the exit opening. A railroad car outlet gate includes one of the vented end caps at each end of a discharge tube with outlet openings at each end. A method includes removal of one vented end cap and applying a vacuum to the uncovered discharge opening. In one form, a filter clean seal is disposed at each outlet opening.

The panel body is arrangeable in the projected position to project in a generally downwardly direction beyond the edge of the outlet and between a gap space defined by the edge of the outlet and an outlet cover arranged in an open position. The baffle may comprise rotatable mounting means for rotatably mounting the panel body on the wall of the hopper such that the panel body is movable between the projected position and a retracted position, where the panel body is arranged so as to provide a minimal or no barrier effect. The baffle may comprise drive means to drive the panel body between the projected position and the extended position. The drive means may be self-actuating means and the self-actuating means are optionally configured to incite the rotation of the panel body between the projected position and the retracted position as the outlet cover moves between an open position and a closed position. The self-actuating means may comprise slidable coupling means for slidably coupling the panel body to the outlet cover and optionally the slidable coupling means comprise one or more low friction contact members mounted on a lower edge and/or side edge of the panel body and arranged in mating contact with the outlet cover.

An automatic pneumatic unloading system is provided so as to unload a pulverant lading from the end compartments or hoppers, as well as the center, of the car, thus eliminating the necessity of sloped end sheets. A pneumatic loading system is provided which permits loading from below and thus permits the elimination of hatches, walkways, and the like on the roof of the car so as to permit the roof to extend substantially the full extent of AAR height clearances thereby to further maximize the lading volume of the car.

A railroad hopper car particularly adapted for shipment of dry, granular-like commodities may have its inner space divided into compartments which in turn are formed with chambers. Each chamber bottom includes a discharge system comprising a pair of aligned fluidizing conveyors which converge downward. Lower ends of the conveyors are spaced apart to define a chute outlet which includes a passageway through a chute portion of a slide gate discharge assembly. The passageway may be closed or opened by selective movement of a door plate connecting with a drive mechanism in a drive portion of the assembly. Commodity in the railroad car is maintained contamination free in part by isolating the chute and drive portion with seals that engage the door plate and a sanitary plate which pivots to close the passageway lower end. During commodity unloading the sanitary plate and door plate are located to clear the passageway through the chute outlet. Additionally, pressurized air is supplied to the conveyors to substantially aerate commodity in and about the chute outlet to enhance its discharge through the chute for delivery external of the car.

A carrier unit adapted to be converted into a bulk material carrier including a container having a floor and two parallel substantially vertical walls. The floor has at least one floor panel movable between a storage position and an operative position and at least one floor section movable between a storage position and an operative position. The floor panel when in the operative position and the floor sections when in the operative position cooperate with portions of the walls to define a compartment and to form an opening in the floor, which communicates with hoppers depending from the floor. A flexible liner is mountable in the compartment, when the floor panel and the floor sections are in the operative positions, for holding bulk material. The flexible liner includes an inlet for charging bulk materials into the liner compartment and an outlet cooperable with the opening for communicating the interior of the liner compartment with the exterior of the compartment for discharging the bulk materials. The floor panel and floor sections when in the storage position form a floor on which general cargo may be stored.
