    摘要: A packer, preferably utilized for dual string operations, comprising a plurality of axially stacked body elements including, from the bottom up, a hydraulic housing, a lower cone element, an annular slip cage containing radially expansible slip elements, an upper cone element, a lower packing expander, an expandable packing element, an upper packing expander, a receptacle, and a retainer plate. All of said elements are provided with two bores equal in diameter to that of the tubing string to be run which extend entirely through the axial stack. One bore accomodates a long string mandrel and the other bore accomodates a short string mandrel conventionally connected to a short tubing string. The short string mandrel is connected at one end to the hydraulic housing and at the other end to the receptacle housing. Fluid pressure is applied to concurrently effect the downward movement of the hydraulic housing and the upward movement of the lower cone to set the packer into engagement with the conduit wall. The packer is secured in set position by one or more locking rods detachably secured to the retainer plate and extending through the axially stacked assemblage to a unidirectional ratcheting connection with the lower cone element.

    摘要: A sealing assembly for effecting the sealing of an annulus between two telescopically related tubular conduits, of the type employed in subterranean wells, is achieved by utilizing annular seal backup elements dieformed from a knitted wire mesh by two successive dieforming steps. In the first dieforming, the knitted mesh backup element is formed to an external diameter equal to or preferably exceeding the maximum diameter that will be required for the backup member to assume when expanded into engagement with the outer wall of the annulus to be sealed. The second dieforming operation reduces the external diameter of the annular knitted mesh seal backup element to a dimension less than the outer wall of the annulus to be sealed, thus permitting convenient assembly and run-in of the sealing assemblage. The two step dieforming operation significantly reduces the amount of axial compressive force required to expand the sealing elements and the seal backup members to their sealed position.

    摘要: An injection tool for use in injecting fluids into perforations of a production formation of an oil or gas well is mechanically set in the bore of the casing traversing the production formation, and mechanically releasable therefrom so that chemical treatment fluid can be injected between upper and lower packing elements into a single or a selected vertical group of perforations. The injection tool is connected to the tubing string by a circulation valve operable by rotational movement of the tubing string. Injection of the chemical fluid treatment is accomplished with the circulation valve in the closed position, while the circulation valve is opened to equalize tubing and annulus pressure whenever required.

    摘要: A packer for effecting steam treatment of a production formation of a subterranean well comprises an insulated mandrel which is slidably inserted within the bore of an inner tubular body assembly. An outer operative tubular assembly surrounds the inner assembly and mounts a plurality of drag blocks, upper and lower cone elements, a plurality of radially displaceable slips cooperating with the upper and lower cone elements, and an outer packing element fabricated by an assemblage of high temperature resistant, non-resilient seal elements formed primarily of graphite. An inner packing element is provided in the inner tubular body assembly, utilizing additional high temperature resistant, non-resilient seal elements formed primarily of graphite, which sealingly engages the insulated mandrel. The packer is set by rotation of the tubing string to position a J-pin in the axially elongated portion of a J-slot, followed by upward movement of the tubing string to effect compression of the external packing element to form a seal with the casing wall and concurrently, expansion of the slips by the upper and lower cones. A ratcheting element mounted in the same ring as the J-pin traps the axial forces within the packing element and the interengaged cones and slips.

    摘要: Methods and apparatus are provided for retrieving an inflatable packer of a type which may be passed through a small diameter tubing, seal against a relatively large diameter casing by passing fluid to the packer through a remedial tubing, and then be retrieved to the surface through the small diameter tubing. If the downhole equipment assembly becomes hung up during retrieval, fluid may be passed through the remedial tubing to release an upper portion of the packer actuator assembly from a lower portion of the packer actuator assembly. The released upper portion and remedial tubing may then be retrieved to the surface, and a conventional fishing tool utilized to subsequently retrieve the lower portion and the packer.

    摘要: A sealing apparatus having particular utility in a submersible electric motor utilized in subterranean wells comprises a tubular housing assembly securable in upwardly projecting, sealed relationship to the motor housing. An extension of the motor shaft projects upwardly through the tubular housing to drive a pump or other subterranean well tool. The upper end of the extension shaft is exposed to well fluids and a first shaft seal is mounted in a seal mounting chamber defined in the upper end of the tubular housing assemblage. Below the seal mounting chamber, the tubular housing assemblage defines a diaphragm chamber. A conduit is provided between the lower portions of the seal mounting chamber and the lower portions of the diaphragm chamber. A flexible, annular diaphragm divides the diaphragm chamber and is exposed on its exterior to well fluids, and on its interior to a light density motor protective fluid, thus equalizing any pressure differential between the motor protective fluid and the external well fluids. The diaphragm chamber is connected at its upper end to a downwardly extending axial passage surrounding the motor shaft and communicating with the interior of the motor housing.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for inserting a seal stack in a seal bore defined by a well tool located downhole where ambient conditions would cause radial swelling of the seal stack. The seal stack is mounted at the surface in a confined space defined between a mandrel and a constraining sleeve shearably connected to the mandrel. Upon run-in of the mandrel to enter the seal bore, the constraining sleeve engages an upwardly facing surface surrounding the entrance to the seal bore which prevents further downward movement of the constraining sleeve. Application of a downward force effects the shearing of the connection between the mandrel and the constraining sleeve and permits the mandrel and seal stack to be inserted in the seal bore while the constraining sleeve moves upwardly relative to the mandrel.

    摘要: An anchoring apparatus for securing a production tubing string against axial movement in a subterranean well is disclosed. The anchoring apparatus can be employed with a conventional sucker rod pumping apparatus transporting fluids through the production tubing. A separate injection line is attached to the exterior of the production tubing and treating fluids are injected therethrough. A conduit which can be connected to the separate injection line extends along the exterior of the inner body of the anchoring apparatus in an axially extending groove and extends through encircling anchoring slips which are expanded by rotational movement of the production tubing and of the body of the anchoring apparatus.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for effecting the sealing of a well conduit comprises the positioning of a sealing plug unit within a special nipple provided in the well conduit and defining first and second surfaces and a seal bore. The sealing plug unit is provided with external seal elements cooperable with the seal bore and a first and second latching elements respectively cooperable with the first and second surfaces provided on the nipple. The sealing plug is actuated by first passing it downwardly through the nipple and then retracting it upwardly, whereupon the first of the latching elements engages with one of the surfaces on the nipple, thus preventing further upward movement on the assembly and permitting the application of a tensile force to release the plugging unit from the remainder of the unit to bring a camming sleeve into engagement with the second latching element to cam such element outwardly into engagement with an upper recess of the nipple. The sealing plug unit may be removed from the nipple through the application of applied force which effects the release of the camming sleeve holding latch elements in their locked position, thus permitting the sealing plug unit to be forced through the special nipple and discarded into the bottom of the well.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for effecting the perforation of a well casing and the adjoining production formation comprises a tubular housing communicating between a perforating gun housing and the lower end of a tubular string. The perforating gun housing which is adapted to be carriable by the tubular string contains an impact actuated firing head and the tubular housing contains a port normally closed by sleeve valve. The valve is biased towards an open position but is selectively secured in its closed position by a frangible restraining mechanism which extends into the free fall path of a detonating bar dropped through the tubular tool string and is removed by the detonating bar to initiate the opening of the port sleeve valve prior to impacting the firing head. In a modification, the sleeve valve is shifted to its open position by fluid pressure produced in the casing annulus subsequent to the firing of the perforating gun.
