A porous refractory object, more particularly a porous silicon carbide igniter is shown, the interconnecting pores and passageways of its body being filled with sub-micron sized silicon carbide particles deposited therein from a slurry coated on the surface of the object, which particles are subsequently oxidized at least on the surface and within the passages or pores in the subjacent surface portion of the body, to provide a protective coating of silica within the pores and on the surfaces of the object to preclude oxidation of the internal phases of the body of the object in oxidizing atmospheres.

An improved injection molding machine is described wherein the so-called ''''wasteless'''' process is achieved by insulating the supply of raw rubber from the mold chamber which is heated during high pressure molding to cure the rubber parts being molded. The present invention is an improvement in the device described in German Offenlegungsschrift No. 2164219 of July 5, 1973, particularly with respect to the details of construction of the insulating plate. The insulating plate in the present invention is preferably made of two pieces intimately bonded by means of a suitable adhesive, with that portion adjacent the mold being formed of a good insulating material and that portion adjacent the supply of rubber being formed of metal to provide adequate strength particularly for withstanding stresses occurring due to breaking of the sprues which extend partially but not completely, through the insulating plate.

Compositions in the ceria, alumina, zirconia ternary composition diagram are prepared by sintering very finely divided powder mixtures which are preformed into abrasive grit sized particles prior to firing at 1350* to 1600*C. Very strong grits are obtained, highly resistant to impact, and having a low destructability factor in the rough grinding of metals such as stainless steel and carbon steels.

A lens grinding machine with a radially adjustable work holder on which various sizes of lens carriers with lens blanks to be ground, may be mounted and moved at various predetermined radii from a center across the peripheral abrasive surface of a radially adjustable grinding wheel. The center of the radii is situated at the intersection of the rotational grinding plane of the peripheral abrasive surface and the plane of movement of the lens blanks lying on the rotational axis of the wheel and at right angles to the rotational grinding plane whereby concave surfaces with constant primary and secondary radii are ground on the lens blanks. The grinding wheel has a slotted support center with flexible and resilient angularly spaced deformable wall portions of predetermined shape extending from a hub portion to peripheral surfaces supporting bonded abrasive segments containing an alkali soluble abrasive bond and is mounted on an arbor adapted with means to clamp the wheel and vary the shape of the deformable wall portions and radius of the peripheral abrasive surface of the wheel.

A hot pressed ceramic body is formed of a sandwich comprising an interior layer of a ceramic material having a given coefficient of thermal expansion and two outer surface layers formed of a ceramic material having a lower coefficient of thermal expansion. When the product is formed as a unitary sandwich by hot pressing at elevated temperature the outer layers are put under compression as the body is cooled to room temperature. A preferred form of the invention involves a central layer of a mixture of silicon carbide and silicon nitride and the external layers are pure silicon nitride.

A turbine rotor, comprising a hub or center section and an outer blade section integrally attached to the hub section, both sections being composed of a ceramic refractory material. The hub section possesses a high degree of mechanical strength, which normally requires that it have a specific gravity close to the theoretical specific gravity of the ceramic material used. The blade section of the rotor, which is permanently bonded to the hub, is composed of the same ceramic material as the hub section but of lower strength and lower density. The effect of the latter is relative ease of fabrication and reduced stresses on the hub section when attached thereto.

Improved fused zirconia alumina is decribed. The abrasive is superior to normal alumina-zirconia abrasive in two ways. 1. Where processed into grain, the grain yield is much higher, which gives a lower comminution cost per pound of useable grain. 2. The grain durability is much higher, while maintaining or improving the rate of metal removal, in snagging tests. These improvements are realized by making an addition of from 1 to 7% of ceria to an alumina-zirconium fusion.
