Disclosed is a method of adding moisture to a double compressed bale. The method includes the steps of receiving a forage and separating the forage to form a separated forage. The method further includes applying a moisture stream to the separated forage to form a moisten forage. The moisten forage is then compacted to a density of greater than 20 pounds per cubic foot. Furthermore, the moisten forage may be compacted and reduced in volume from about 10:1 to 30:1.

An apparatus is provided for processing large hay bales of approximately 750 kg to produce smaller recompacted manageable units to facilitate shipping in containers. The apparatus provides means for cutting the bales into at least two slabs, preferably three slabs, and means for cutting these slabs into two approximately equal pieces. Means are provided for each piece to be recompressed, strapped and cut again to provide units having an approximate weight of 35 kg.

A forage compactor for compressing forage or crop into bales of increased crop density for transportation. A crop feed area feeds crop to a conveyor where it is moved to a scale area for proper bale weight. An indexer severs the crop while moving it from the scale area to the compression chamber. The crop is compressed and moved to a strapping chamber where straps are applied to the compressed crop. The bound bale is manipulated as desired at the product handling area downstream from the strapping chamber. The crop is provided with substantially constant stress during compression and moisture sensors in the strapping chamber sense the moisture content of the severed crop within the bale to be bound. The weight of the crop within the compression area may be reduced to reduce machine overloading. Keyway plungers provide reduced side loading on the main ram used for crop compression. The feed inlet area is located on the same side of the compression chamber as the exit chamber to allow for more efficient operation and area utilisation.

An auger compactor is described in which a hopper is provided to feed vegetation into the intake end of a compression chamber which leads from the intake end opening into the hopper to a discharge end. A first helical auger flight extends along an auger axis, of a pitch that diminishes from a maximum pitch adjacent the intake end of the compression chamber to a minimum pitch adjacent the discharge end. A second helical auger flight is also situated within the compression chamber, circumscribing and slidably supporting the first helical auger flight. The second auger flight includes a second helical pitch that also diminishes from a point adjacent the intake end of the compression chamber to a point adjacent the discharge end of the compression chamber. A drive is provided to rotate one of the flights about the auger axis, to move and compact vegetation along a flow path from the hopper through the discharge end of the compression chamber. An over-compression chamber opening into the discharge end of the compression chamber, with a compression bulkhead positioned normal to the auger axis. An over-compression member faces the compression bulkhead across the over-compression chamber and is driven to forcibly shift the over-compression member between a first position spaced from the compression bulkhead by at least a bale width dimension and a second position spaced from the compression bulkhead by a distance less than the bale width dimension.

An apparatus for compressing and containing a material in an elastomeric net (26). The apparatus comprises a compression chamber (12), a material compressor (16), a holding chamber (18), a net expansion and placement mechanism (42), and a bale advance mechanism (20). The material compressor is coupled to the compression chamber to compress a selected amount of the fibrous material in a direction transverse to the general lay of the material within the compression chamber to form a compacted bale (10). The holding chamber has an outlet and an inlet coupled to the compression chamber. The holding chamber also has an axis defined by a line extending between the center of the inlet to the center of the outlet. The net expansion and placement mechanism is for receiving the net, stretching the net to obtain a cross-sectional shape that is slightly larger than that of the holding chamber, and placing the net over the holding chamber with one end of the net slightly extending beyond the outlet. The bale advance mechanism is coupled to the holding chamber and compression chamber. Its function is to advance the bale from the compression chamber to the holding chamber and through the holding chamber outlet such that the bale contacts the end of the net that extends beyond the outlet and pulls the net onto the bale when the bale advances through the outlet.

A method of unitizing a cargo of multiple substantially identical high density hay bales into multiple non-palletized units capable of being handled by a forklift truck or the like and fitted into shipping containers and utility vehicle cargo spaces comprises the steps of selecting a plurality of substantially identical high density bales of hay, arranging the plurality of bales of hay into selected size stacks of at least one layer of multiple horizontal rows, and wrapping multiple layers of an elongated continuous sheet of pre-stretched polymeric film having a memory horizontally around the plurality of bales of hay.

Recompressed rectilinear hay bales or split portions thereof have one or both opposed sides not supporting ties trimmed to provide new planar surfaces of fresher and more pleasing appearance. The process of forming such bales provides 1) placing an elongate field bale having spaced ties extending about four continuous sides in a recompression chamber, 2) removing the original ties from the bale while maintaining the compression, 3) recompressing the bale a direction parallel to its longer dimension by approximately sixty-five percent, 4) retying the recompressed bale with new ties on the same four continuous bale sides while maintaining the recompressed condition, 5) removing the recompressed bale from the recompressor and optionally cutting it into two similar parts between ties, 6) passing the bale or bale portions adjacent at least one saw blade to trim at least one original bale surfaces not supporting ties, and 7) removing the bale and trimmed material for further disposition.

Bales of hay and the like which were bundled or baled in the field are recompressed to about one-half their original length by using a high-pressure ram on the bales after their wires have been cut and removed, over-compressing the bales and then after relaxing the over-compression, restrapping the recompacted bale through a set of strap guides which are automatically adjusted in the direction of the press stroke to guide the strap around the recompacted bale regardless of the amount of over-compression of the bale.

Systems and methods for recompressing a round bale into a square bale. The system includes a bottom platen to receive the round bale and an upper platen rotatably coupled to the bottom platen. The upper platen is rotatable between a first position to receive the round bale between the bottom platen and the upper platen, and a second position in which the upper platen cooperates with the bottom platen to recompress the round bale into the square bale.

A hay press configured to generally (i) receive hay bales; (ii) cut the twine holding the hay bales together; (iii) move, by weight, a pre-established amount of hay into a compression chamber; (iv) compress the pre-established amount of hay into a package of pre-established size; and (v) eject and wrap the compressed package of hay for shipping. The hay press includes a (i) loading table and destacker; (ii) twine slicer; (iii) loading compartment; (iv) loading hydraulic press and platen; (v) infeed forks; (vi) compression chamber; (vii) scale; (viii) compression chamber door; (ix) hydraulic compression ram and platen; (x) hydraulic ejection press and platen; and (xi) ejection chute. An optional conveyor system may operate in conjunction with the hay press to transport loose hay having fallen during operation of the hay press to a loose hay loading chamber.
