摘要： A lock can include attack-resistant and/or weather-resistant features. Attack-resistant features can include a sacrificial link between a locking mechanism and an external keyway covering an exterior face of the locking mechanism. The sacrificial link can break during a torque attack on the lock such that the full force of the torque attack is not applied to the locking mechanism. Weather-resistant features can include drain openings in one or more housing components external to the locking mechanism to facilitate drainage of liquid matter from the lock before the liquid matter reaches the locking mechanism.

The indicium (108) is adapted to provide a visual indication of a status of the closure (106) or the compartment (110), such as closure open, closure closed, compartment empty, compartment occupied. Instead of indicium (108) or in addition to it, the closure of the invention can include in the fastener means for communicating to a remote device, a status of the closure or the compartment. The closure and the compartment may form an array with other closures and compartments having similar fasteners. In that event, the fastener in each compartment may be addressable.

The incoming mail chamber is designed for mail to go down a mail chute into a basket for pick-up through back of the locked mailbox. Outgoing mail can be placed from the back for pick-up from the front by postal worker. The mailbox is attached to the ground though internal poles extending from the bottom of the mailbox into the ground and cemented. Modifications have been made to allow use by rural and city dwellers alike, so that all mail can be secured.

摘要： A multi-compartment facility having a master door which can be opened by use of a master key and, when opened, admits substantially unrestricted access to all of the mailbox compartments, the master door incorporating a plurality of pivotally-mounted, sub-doors arranged to register each with a different one of the compartments and the sub-doors being individually lockable and openable only by assigned key holders. A manually operable control determines the condition of the flaps and employs a gear and rack system which moves a cam to longitudinally displace hinge rods for the sub doors, flap locking members being carried by the hinge rods and either preventing opening of the flaps or permittting them to open depending on the displacement condition of the hinge rods. In a modified arrangement, the flaps can be selectively and individually rendered non-lockable whereby the users can opt to receive junk mail and other deliverables.

摘要： An interlocking door seam provides a stronger seam for double doors, making them less subject to attack by prybars and the like. Particularly for central mail stations (CMS) and central box units CBU, double doors present there are subject to attack by prybars and the like that force the locks and allow thieves to rifle the contents of the enclosed mail boxes. Attachment of interlocking door seam to the first edge of the first double doors protects that first edge from prybar attacks. The adjoining edge of the second double door then releasably fits into a convex strip that protects the adjoining edge of the second double door, thereby protecting it from prybar attack. The interlocking door seam allows normal operation of the double doors while decreasing the risk to the central mail station of prybar attack at the seam between the double doors. Flanges present along the free edge of the convex strip provide easy engagement of that free edge. Gaps between such flanges accommodate shelving inside the central mail station. Construction of the interlocking door seam by tempered steel or hard and durable materials provides enhanced protection from prybar attack. Additionally, a main access door bolt bracket may serve to better secure and close the double doors, thwarting forced entry therethrough. The individual mailbox slot doors may have hooked cams to provide fail-safe closure.

The mailbox has attachment grooves on one side and top that can engage with attachment ribs on the other side and bottom thus permitting a plurality of mailboxes to be stacked together. The mailbox has an exterior casing, substantially oblong in shape with an open front, and an inner container that fits within the exterior casing and is pivotable about internal protrusions from end walls of the casing, and is removable from the casing. A locking system retains the inner container in an upright position within the exterior casing.
