Abstract: A metal orthodontic mouth gag is provided, which includes an upper supporting frame, a lower supporting frame, a supporting wing of a left molar area and a supporting wing of a right molar area. The upper supporting frame is a serpentine upper bent rod which is made by a thin steel wire being sequentially wound up and down, and the lower supporting frame is a serpentine lower bent rod which is made by a thin steel wire being sequentially wound up and down. The supporting wing of the left molar area includes a left C-shaped supporting rod and a left blocking supporting frame, and the supporting wing of the right molar area includes a right C-shaped supporting rod and a right blocking supporting frame. The blocking supporting frames are connected into the corresponding C-shaped supporting rods.

Abstract: The invention relates to a computer-implemented method for assessing a clearance between a tooth element to be provided with a dental restoration element and an antagonist of the tooth element. A 3D digital teeth model with 3D digital representations of the tooth element and of a surface area of the antagonist is received. The surface area is offset from the antagonist by adding an offset. The resulting offset surface area defines a limit for the tooth element. For the clearance it is checked, whether the tooth element violates one or more penetration criteria regarding the offset surface area. If the tooth element violates the one or more penetration criteria, the clearance is assessed to be insufficient for the tooth element to be provided with the dental restoration element. Else the clearance is assessed to be sufficient. The result of the assessment is output.

Abstract: An orthodontic appliance is disclosed that integrates an arch expander with a first segment and a second segment. The first and second segments are disposed on opposite sides of a midline of a dentition of an orthodontic patient. Both the first segment and the second segment are disposed over multiple teeth on the respective side of the midline, with a gap existing proceeding along the dentition between anterior-most portions of the first segment and the second segment. The arch expander is integrated with the first and second segments to exert an anteriorly-disposed expansion force on the patient's dentition through the first and second segments, for instance where the posterior-most location where these expansion forces are exerted corresponds with a first bicuspid on each side of a permanent the dentition.

Abstract: A system and method that is a web based application for creating and managing 3D models used in orthodontic laboratory prescriptions within a dental clinic or lab. The method includes automatically detecting and removing any appliances contained within the 3D image file. After the appliances have been removed, the system then automatically replaces the removed image data with new mage data that is calculated to approximate the surface of the tooth disposed beneath the deleted appliance in order to create a clean, second 3D image. The method may further automatically refine the second 3D image of the patients teeth or delete any artifacts which remain after creation of the second 3D image. The second 3D image may then be used as the basis on which to change the patients orthodontic or dental prescription.

Abstract: Colored dental floss and a method for using colored dental floss. The colored dental floss includes an elongated filament having a plurality of segments, wherein each segment is a distinct color. The elongated filament is disposed within an interior volume of a container. The container includes an aperture for the elongated filament to pass therethrough. The method of using colored dental floss includes the steps of preparing a lingual side of a plurality of teeth for application of a bonding agent, applying the bonding agent to the lingual side, threading the elongated filament between a desired number of adjacent teeth in sections such that the elongated filament forms a plurality of loops on the lingual side, placing a wire through the plurality of loops, tensioning the elongated filament, applying the bonding agent to a contact point between the lingual side and the wire, curing the bonding agent, and removing the elongated filament.

Abstract: Orthodontic bracket assemblies with torque-adjusting drums. The drum defines at least a majority of the archwire slot of the corresponding bracket assembly, and the drum may be selectively rotated about its longitudinal axis to adjust the prescriptive force that is applied to a patient's tooth during orthodontic use of the bracket assembly. The bracket assembly includes a positioning assembly that selectively retains the drum in a selected orientation relative to the base of the bracket assembly, thereby defining a prescription to be imparted by the bracket assembly to a patient's tooth. In some embodiments, the bracket assembly includes a biasing mechanism that selectively urges the positioning assembly to a position in which the drum is, or is not, retained in a selected position. In some embodiments, the bracket includes a release mechanism that selectively disengages the positioning assembly to permit adjustment of the drum.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an orthodontic gripping device having a body made of a superelastic metal alloy, cold worked titanium beta III, or solution heat treated and aged titanium beta III. The body has first and second, spaced apart arm portions connected to each other. Each arm portion includes a jaw portion having an inner, arch wire-gripping, surface. The inner gripping surfaces are disposed opposite one another in spaced relation with a station defined therebetween for receiving the arch wire. At least a portion of the station is sized smaller than the arch wire. The arm portions are resiliently deflectable outwardly away from each other to admit the arch wire into the station. Once seated in the station, the arch wire is tightly held by inner gripping surfaces so as to resist displacement of the gripping device relative to the arch wire.
