Abstract: An item sorting system is described. The item sorting system includes at least one bin that holds items to be sorted and a light source that illuminates the items stored in the at least one bin. In implementations, the at least one bin includes walls that direct light, received from the light source via a first surface, for emission via a second surface facing an interior of the at least one bin. The item sorting system further includes a recognition device that identifies the items for use in sorting the items. The item sorting system further includes an end effector that manipulates the items during sorting. In some implementations, the end effector includes tips that apply a gentle vacuum force to individually manipulate items in a manner that allows for efficient sorting without damaging the items.

Abstract: An automated process for separating and recycling a broad mix of waste material including, but not limited to, paper and flexible plastics. A materials recovery facility (MRF) collects, presorts, and separates into individual commodities the material, then separates partially processed 2D blends from 3D containers, while refraining from any quality control of the 2D blends, and bales the 2D blends. A fiber center receives the bales from the MRF, aggregates the partially processed 2D blends, removes recyclable commodities including flexible plastics from the 2D blends, aggregates each recyclable commodity that is removed from the 2D blends, and forms separate commodity streams of clean paper and clean flexible plastics. Also provided are a related fiber center (and an infrastructure including the center) and at least one computer-readable non-transitory storage medium embodying software for performing the process.

Abstract: According to an embodiment, an inspection apparatus includes a communication interface and a processor. The communication interface acquires results of single-item determination, which are inspection results for individual parcels that are successively conveyed, and number-of-items information for identifying, as one parcel group, a plurality of parcels among the individual parcels. The processor identifies a plurality of parcels as one parcel group, based on the number-of-items information, determines a result of multiple-item determination, which is an inspection result for the parcel group, based on the results of the single-item determination for the individual parcels included in the parcel group, and distributes the individual parcels included in the parcel group, based on the result of the multiple-item determination.

Abstract: A machine for inspecting, sorting and stacking items includes a plurality of conveyor lanes for moving items through the machine. An imaging system is arranged relative to the conveyor lanes to view items moving along the conveyor lanes. A reject arrangement is downstream of the imaging system and includes a plurality of selectively actuatable reject mechanisms, each reject mechanism associated with a respective one of the conveyor lanes enabling items to be selectively dropped from each conveyor lane on an individual lane basis. Items that pass inspection are conveyed to a downstream stacker, then on to item stack conveyors before being moved onto a side transfer conveyor. A controller analyzes image data to make a determination of whether any item is below a defined quality threshold and, if so, to control the reject mechanism to drop the below quality item out of the conveyor lane.
