Abstract: A surface-coated cutting tool includes a base material and a coating formed on the base material. The coating includes an α-Al2O3 layer. The α-Al2O3 layer contains α-Al2O3 crystal grains and sulfur, and has a TC(006) of more than 5 in texture coefficient TC(hkl). The sulfur has a concentration distribution in which a concentration of the sulfur decreases in a direction away from a base-material-side surface of the α-Al2O3 layer, in a thickness direction of the α-Al2O3 layer.

Abstract: The present invention relates to cutting insert for dry milling of hard cast steel with a hardness of from about 50 to about 65 HRC comprising a substrate and a coating. The substrate has a hardness of from about 1900 to about 2100 HV3, with a negative chamfer and an edge rounding of 0 (sharp) to about 40 μm. The coating comprises a homogeneous AlxTi1-xN-layer with x equals from about 0.6 to about 0.67 and a thickness of from about 1 to about 3.8 μm. Abstract: An insert made of an ultra-high-pressure sintered compact and including no base metal or support layer is brazed to a tool body under vacuum by use of a Ti-containing activated silver brazing filler metal. This method permits the insert to be securely fixed to the tool body without fear of the insert coming off the tool body even if the tool is a helical one. Because no base metal layer is needed, the manufacturing yield, efficiency and productivity are improved.

Abstract: A cemented carbide ball end mill comprises a cutting portion with a semi-spherical ball portion at a tip thereof, and has a following configuration. When an intersection line between a cutting edge rake face and a chip evacuating flute at the ball portion is projected on a plane which includes a central axis of the ball end mill and is parallel with a cutting edge at the central portion of a ball portion tip, projected on the plane is a convex-curved line or a straight line. An angle formed by the straight line connecting a vertex of the ball portion, where the intersection line passes through, and the other end of the intersection line with respect to the central axis is from 30null to 50null. Further, an angle formed by the rake face and the chip evacuating flute is from 100null to 150null, and a width of the chip evacuating flute is 0.5 to 5 times as large as a radius of the ball portion. On the cutting portion, a coating film of titanium carbide or the like is formed as a first layer, and another coating film of a silicon carbide system amorphous film or the like having a physical property similar to that of diamond is added as a second layer. The cemented carbide ball end mill suffers less deposition of melted metal even when dry-cutting an aluminum alloy, has a long service life, and enables the machining providing an excellent surface property.
