Abstract:
An improved pipe belling process is shown which features a mandrel having a specially designed backup or forming collar. The backup collar has an outer contact surface which forms an undulating pattern when viewed in cross section. The undulating surface reduces the contact area between the outer contact surface of the collar and the lip region of a plastic pipe being belled, thereby lowering the coefficient of friction that exists between the pipe lip region and the collar.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for restraining pipe against both internal and external forces at a pipe or fitting connection and to join and seal at least two pipes to form a pipeline is shown featuring an improved restraining and sealing mechanism. The restraining and sealing mechanism includes a circumferential housing and a companion sealing ring which are received within a mating groove provided in the belled end of a female pipe. The circumferential housing has an interior region which contains a gripping ring insert. The sealing ring and housing are integrally located within a belled pipe end during belling operations.

Abstract:
Apparatus for seating a gasket in a plastic pipe bell is disclosed which includes providing a peripheral groove in a belling mandrel and seating a specially designed hard plastic ring in the groove. The hard plastic ring is molded to provide exterior ramps for forming an annular pocket in the pipe bell and is inwardly configured to provide a secure seating surface to receive and retain a resilient gasket thereon. The mandrel is urged into a preheated end of the pipe and vacuum forces are employed to pull the end of the pipe about the periphery of the mandrel and tightly against the exterior ramps of the hard plastic ring for forming the bell shape. Upon sufficient cooling of the pipe end, the mandrel is withdrawn and the plastic ring remains encapsulated within the bell shape. Upon removal of the mandrel, a resilient gasket is then seated within the bell in intimate overall contact with the seating surface of the plastic ring.

Abstract:
The invention relates to a process for the production of coupling pieces which possess an undercut annular groove optionally provided with a sealing ring, in which process a sleeve, having an internal diameter which increases in steps towards the open end, is initially preformed, the terminal part of the sleeve is postformed in order to form the annular groove, after having optionally introduced a sealing ring into the preformed sleeve, and, during preforming, only the terminal part of the preformed sleeve is kept at the deformation temperature and the remainder of the preformed sleeve is cooled, the terminal part of the preformed sleeve being cooled after postforming. The device according to the invention comprises a forming mandrel, the front part of which possesses a cooling chamber and the rear part of which possesses heating means, a postforming ring, which can move radially and axially and is equipped with a cooling chamber, and optionally a moulding sheath, a closing ring, which is equipped with heating means, and a member for introducing the sealing ring, which member can move radially and axially.
Abstract:
Joints for thermoplastic pipe. The necessity of providing a sealing ring between the socket and spigot of such a joint results in forming a ring groove in the socket and affixing the sealing ring within this ring groove. The present invention contemplates forming a sealing ring groove 6 so configured around a sealing ring 11 with a substantially axially incompressible portion 12 to lock the sealing ring in place and also to enhance the ease of assembly and ability of the thus assembled joint to structurally withstand elevated hydrostatic pressures. Also disclosed is an apparatus 20 and 44 for forming the preferred socket configuration.
Abstract:
A method of forming the bell end of a bell and spigot joint connecting two pipes together is disclosed herein and utilizes a mandrel assembly including an elongated core and a retractable ramp arrangement. A sealing gasket is positioned around the core and to one side of the ramp arrangement. Thereafter, an end section of a heat deformable pipe, heated to its deformable state, is moved concentrically over the core, retractable ramp arrangement and sealing gasket to form an enlarged sleeve or bell having an inner circumferential groove within which the sealing gasket is located. During this movement, as the heated end section approaches the sealing gasket, the ramp arrangement causes the end section to deform outwardly and over the gasket, whereupon the ramp arrangement retracts inwardly for allowing the outwardly deformed end section to shrink back to the core and around the gasket.
Abstract:
The bell end of a bell and spigot pipe is disclosed herein and includes an inner-circumferential groove within which a circumferential sealing gasket is located. The groove has a particular configuration which provides resistance to gasket displacement during assembly of a bell and spigot joint. In a preferred configuration, the gasket is locked in the groove. This is accomplished, as disclosed herein, by initially forming the groove around a sealing gasket and core section. Thereafter, the groove configuration is altered to provide increased resistance to gasket displacement, preferably to lock the gasket within the groove.
