摘要: A stabilizer that extends from the hull of a watercraft below the waterline when needed is disclosed. The stabilizer produces added drag on the watercraft's counteracting a tendency to change bearing. Stabilization chambers of the stabilizer hold semi contained water to produce an extended drag effect by adding lateral weight due to the water that is semi contained within the chamber during use. The restricted flow of water into and out of the stabilizer and the outer dimensions of the stabilizer provides lateral drag to mute any ambient drift.

摘要: A control system for a supercavitating vehicle includes a set of winglets for rapid maneuverability and a segmented ring wing for fine stabilization control. The winglets and ring wing extend from an aft portion of the vehicle. The winglets are supported by a strut attached to the vehicle. The angle of attack of each winglet into the water adjacent the cavity is controlled by a winglet actuator. The winglet assembly may be extended into the water or retracted to be completely within the cavity by means of a spring-loaded actuated mount. The segmented ring wing is controlled by a ring actuator. The ring actuator may be used to control the angle of attack of the ring wing. Alternately, or in combination, the flow over the ring wing may be neutralized by using the cavitator of the vehicle to globally enlarge the cavity and thus limit the flow.

摘要: A simple, lightweight, manually-controlled device for stabilizing and increasing the performance of small, sail-assisted watercraft, containing a single moving part and comprising a curved spar or iako (1) joining a main hull and a single outrigger hull or ama, a tubular shaft (2) with a handle (7) at one end and an “L” shaped hydrofoil (5 and 6) at the other end. The tubular shaft (2) is joined to the iako (1) by two or more struts (3) that are fixed to the iako (1) at their upper ends and have machine screws (8) or sleeves (4) at their lower ends by means of which the tubular shaft (2) is permitted to rotate around its longitudinal axis and is prevented from moving horizontally in relation to the curved iako (1), thereby making the entire assembly a truss or girder that resists vertical distortion or flexion. The vertical portion of the foil (6) makes an obtuse angle of specified range with the submerged blade portion of the foil (5) so that a horizontal force vector in a windward direction is created by the foil when it moves through the water, regardless of the tack on which the watercraft is sailed. An accessory device for transporting either a single passenger or equipment, consisting of two fore-and-aft rails (9) the ends of which rest on, or snap onto, or are otherwise affixed to the iako (1) and a second iako abaft thereof, and a webbing or fabric sling (10) attached to and suspended between said fore-and-aft rails (9).

摘要: In a dual-hull watercraft, a separate keel hull and sail hull are connected by a tie line. The sail hull comprises a sail and hull without a keel. The keel hull comprises a keel and hull or a submerged keel. The flexible tie line is coupled to the keel at or near the keel center of effort and is coupled to the sail at or near the center of sail effort. During operation, the sail and keel are configured to "toe in" relative to each other, maintaining tension in the tie line allowing the sail and keel to provide for the other's drag. The tie line allows for directional steering of the craft without a rudder, and for controlling the speed of the craft and the heel angles of the sail and keel hulls. Two gliders similarly connected can exploit wind velocity differences and are operable without updrafts.

摘要: A system for reducing roll of vessels comprises at least one and preferably a pair of hydrofoil devices suspended from lines rigged on each side of the vessel, preferably from outrigger booms. The devices are asymmetrical foils which are arranged to provide a downwardly acting hydrodynamic force as the devices move with respect to the water. The center of the hydrodynamic force, the center of gravity of the device, and the suspension line attachment being in vertical alignment to provide a balanced foil. The devices function when the vessel is under way and when the vessel is stationary. The hydrodynamic force provides tension in the suspension lines which serves to damp the tendency of the vessel to roll while under way. The hydrodynamic force assures that the devices will not suddenly lose their damping effect or loose control and jerk or breach. When not under way, rolling is damped by differential resistance of the devices to upward movement through the water.

The vessel has a loosely stepped mast or kingpost, an outwardly extending arm, and a stabilizer hull pivoted to the outer end of the arm, the stabilizer hull having an angled submerged blade. All overturning forces on the sail are countered by the resistance of the water against the inner side of the blade. This permits the sailing vessel to have many unusual features adding to its speed.
