Abstract: A control valve device especially adapted for the control of a marine engine so as to bypass a critical region of its speed range in which a resonant frequency vibration is encountered. The control valve comprises a differential piston abutment the stem of which cooperates with valve means to control the fluid pressure communication between either a first or second inlet and an outlet which controls the throttle of said engine. Detent means provides a latching force in either of two extreme positions to prevent actuation of the piston abutment in response to a variable speed control signal until the speed control signal reaches a value sufficient to overcome the latching force of the detent means, which latching force corresponds to the upper limit of the critical speed range. In one extreme position of the piston abutment, the valve means is effective to pressurize the outlet in accordance with the output of a regulating valve adjusted to limit the speed control signal to a value corresponding to the lower limit of the critical speed range, while in the other extreme position, the valve means is effective to pressurize the outlet in accordance with the speed control signal. The detent means may be employed either alone or in conjunction with a second regulating valve, the output of which biases the piston abutment in opposition to the speed control signal, to establish the upper limit of the critical speed range.

Abstract: A system for controlling trim position of a marine propulsion device on a marine vessel includes a trim actuator having a first end configured to couple to the marine propulsion device and a second end configured to couple to the marine vessel. A controller controls position of the trim actuator between an extended position wherein the propulsion device is trimmed up with respect to the vessel and a retracted position wherein the propulsion device is trimmed down with respect to the vessel. A shock relief mechanism overrides position control by the controller and allows extension of the trim actuator upon the occurrence of an overpressure event. An arresting mechanism, when activated, prevents extension of the trim actuator beyond a certain limit. The controller selectively activates the arresting mechanism in response to a determination that the propulsion device is being commanded in reverse. Methods for controlling trim position are also included.

Abstract: An apparatus for reducing vibration on a ship with at least two drive shafts by determining and utilizing an optimum angular offset which corresponds to a minimum vibration level. The apparatus comprises a servo-control circuit for servo-controlling the angular difference between the two shafts to a reference value. A calibration circuit determines the optimum angular offset between the shafts corresponding to the minimum vibration level. A control circuit responds to a control signal by actuating in succession the calibration circuit and then the servo-control circuit, wherein the optimum angular offset is set to the reference value.

Abstract: There is described an apparatus for inclusion in a ship comprising a mass (10), that is vibrationally coupled to the ship's hull (12) such that movement of the mass is dampened. The mass (10) is so sized and located as to, when in use it reduces the fundamental and/or harmonics of a transverse two node mode of wave-induced vibration in the ship's hull (12). There is also described an apparatus for inclusion in a ship comprising a mass (10) made up in part of the tackle or fitments of the ship, which also are vibrationally coupled to the ship's hull (12) by a damping such that movement of the mass (10) is dampened so as to thereby, when in use, reduce vibrations in the ship's hull (12). In a preferred embodiment the mass (10) is at least in part a chain locker and that portion of the chain stored therein. By reducing vibrations in the ship's hull (12) significant stresses may be relieved and the performance of the ship enhanced. A ship incorporating the apparatus and a method of reducing vibrations in a ship's hull are also described.

Abstract: The invention provides a power transmitting system for a small boat, such as a water jet propulsion craft, and more particularly, an improved arrangement for connecting an engine output shaft to a propulsion unit input shaft. Also provided is an arrangement for balancing an engine within the craft against undesirable operational forces tending to render the craft unstable. Abstract: A selective damping apparatus includes at least one sensor for detecting, and producing signals indicative of at least the frequency and amplitude of vibrations of a first structural component (a “resonant structure”) having one or more resonant frequencies.
