An apparatus and method for transferring fluids from a fluid container to a fluid reservoir are disclosed. More particularly, the fluid transfer apparatus is directed to the transfer of fluids from commercially supplied plastic containers to various fluid and lubricant reservoirs. The invention enables contaminant and drip free transfer of fluids from locations both above and below the reservoir opening and provides for the precise volumetric measurement of the fluid transferred. The fluid transfer apparatus may comprise a cap with a bore through its upper surface configured to closely receive a tube. The tube may be extended with a suitable length of flexible tubing having an inner diameter configured to closely receive the tube. The present invention can also be viewed as providing a method for transferring fluid. In its broadest terms, the method can be described by the following steps: placing the fluid transfer apparatus on the spout of a fluid container, supplying a sufficient amount of torque to the cap, placing the distal end of the tube near a designated port, adjusting the proximal end of the tube such that it is submersed within the fluid, and applying pressure to the exterior surfaces of the fluid container. Once an operator stops applying sufficient pressure to the fluid container the fluid in the apparatus returns to the fluid container. In an alternative method, an operator may extend the tube and perform the fluid transfer by pouring the fluid.

A dispensing structure is provided for discharging the contents from the interior of a container. The structure includes a body for extending from the container. The body defines a dispensing opening and a sealing surface around the dispensing opening. A lid is provided for movement between open and closed positions. The lid has a frame defining a lid dispensing passage through the lid. The lid has a mounting flange extending inwardly adjacent the dispensing passage, and the lid has a valve mounted to the lid flange across the dispensing passage. The flexible valve has self-sealing slits which open to permit flow therethrough in response to increased pressure on the side of the valve facing the container when the lid is closed. The valve has a lower flange which is below the lid flange and which sealingly engages the body sealing surface when the lid is in the closed position.

In a system comprising a container and a liquid contained therein that builds up a gas or vapor pressure, a sealing valve having a concave shaped portion and a slit extending through said portion, allows venting of the vapor from the container to the ambient at a predetermined vapor threshold pressure. The vapor threshold pressure at which the slit opens for venting can be adjusted by valve restraining means which are preferably formed by a protrusion at the inside of a cap covering the sealing valve. The vapor threshold pressure at which venting takes place, can to a large extent be adjusted without affecting the dispensing characteristics of the valve.
