摘要: In the field of unwinding webs from an unwind stand in which a fresh web is prepared with a paste strip and is lapped spliced to a progressing expiring web, and the expiring web is then cut upstream of the splice to form a tail, the position of the tail is predicted or detected, and the movement thereof to a taping station causes a tape support roll, which supports a strip of one-sided adhesive tape to be applied to the tail in such a manner that part of the adhesive strip covers the tail and part of the strip engages the underlying web so that the tail becomes firmly taped down to the web thereby permitting the web to be run in either direction through processes such as converting processes, coating processes or the like. Embodiments of tape tail detectors are disclosed and embodiments of hold-down tape transfer mechanisms are disclosed.

摘要: A paster tab for releasably securing the beginning end of a roll of material to the first layer of the roll is disclosed. The paster tab includes a color contrast area suitable for optical detection to orient the paper roll. The paster tab further includes a weakened portion for promoting separation of the paster tab between the areas secured to the beginning end of the new roll and the first layer of the roll. A method of splicing the trail end of an expiring ribbon to the beginning end of a new roll of ribbon is further disclosed including adhesively securing the trail end of the old ribbon to both the top of the beginning end of the new ribbon and to a portion of the paster tab.

摘要: An infeed mechanism coacts with a splicer mechanism for splicing successive rolls of web and for feeding the continuous web thus obtained into a rotary press or the like via a web storage mechanism, which normally stores therein a predetermined length of the web for delivery to the press or the like during splicing operation. The infeed mechanism includes a pair of roll holder arms carrying on their opposite ends an old web roll, from which the web is being delivered to the press or the like, and a new web roll to be spliced to the old web. Toward the end of the web delivery from the old web roll the roll holder arms are turned through a preassigned angle, with the result that the web from the old web roll travels close to the periphery of the new web roll. Then the new web roll is revolved about its own axis until an adhesive region thereon comes opposite to the old web. Then, with the rotation of the old web roll arrested, a brush of a retractable splicer mechanism presses the old web against the adhesive region on the new web roll. Preferably an excess length of the old web behind the adhesive region is subsequently cut off by a cutter included in the splicer mechanism. Then the web delivery from the new web roll is started. The complete operation can be automated.

摘要: An assembly and method provide a continuous supply of packaging film to a form, fill and seal packaging machine with two spindles alternately operating as the active spindle to feed the film from one roll at a time. Opposed pneumatic manifolds are operative to splice the tail-end of the film from the active roll to the head-end of the film from the standby roll. The opposed manifolds pivot in opposite directions away from the machine to provide easy access for loading. A programmable controller controls the splicing operation. Valves operated by the controller connect a vacuum source to one of the manifolds to hold the head-end at a splicing station and to the other to maintain tension on the active film after the tail-end leaves the spindle. An end-of-roll detector near the spindle triggers the tensioning function. The width of the manifold is adjustable to accommodate different width film. A photocell detector and encoder in the circuit allow tracking of the tail-end. When it arrives at the splicing station, the appropriate control valve rapidly switches to apply an air blast generated by positive pneumatic pressure to blow the tail-end/head-end together so that adhesive tape pre-applied to the head-end is securely attached to the tail-end to complete the splicing operation. The programmable controller continues to track the splice through the packaging machine to initiate a dry cycle and removal of the splice section.
