摘要:
A method and apparatus for transporting articles comprising single sheets or short stacks of single sheets from a collating machine to a high speed newspaper and/or commercial inserter utilizes a conveyor apparatus intermediate the collator and inserter that twists or rotates the articles through one-quarter turn as they move in succession and at high speed along their path of travel. The one-quarter turn rotation is carried out around an axis that extends longitudinally of the path of travel of the articles from the collator to the inserter. Special twister belts are utilized to grip and convey the articles as they pass through the article rotating portion of the apparatus. Such quarter-turn rotation orients the articles into a radial orientation for direct insertion into rapidly moving pockets of the inserter machine which are preferably moving in a circular path of travel in a plane that is perpendicular to the inserting path of travel of the articles. The articles may have also been previously upended from a flat stack into an edgewise or upended condition if the initial collator is of the type which dispenses the articles on a horizontal moving conveying surface. At all times throughout their conveyance from the collator to the inserter, the articles are maintained under firm control despite traveling at high speeds and significant distances.

A rotary collator having a rotatable drum with a plurality of radially extending partitions or bins in which sheets to be collated are held by a sheet clamp mounted in each bin. The sheet clamp for each bin has a solenoid-based activating device which releases the sheet clamp during the sheet ejecting portion of the collating cycle. The sheet clamp is released a short time before the rotatable drum brings the associated bin into a sheet ejecting position. A toggle structure and a relatively high compression spring are used to hold the sheets in the bin when in clamping position. The sheet clamp of any empty bin is programmed not to release, thereby greatly reducing noise and extending the life of the mechanism.

A sheet withdrawing mechanism is disclosed for a collator having a plurality of spaced moving shelves or partitions forming pockets. Each partition or pocket receives a pile of sheets and as each pocket passes sheet withdrawing position, rotating spiders, preferably having a plurality of arms, each extend an arm into each pocket in succession, engage the top sheet of the pile and at least partially withdraw the sheet far enough to be reached by adjacent secondary withdrawing mechanism which completes the withdrawal of the sheet from the pocket. Two constructions of spiders are illustrated and described, one having relatively long arms for partition spacing having a relatively large dimension so that the arc of movement of the end of each arm is great enough to withdraw the sheet sufficiently solely by the sweep of the arm. The second spider construction is for partition spacing having a relatively lesser dimension so that a greater number of pockets can be provided in an over-all dimension. This second spider has relatively shorter arms and has a withdrawal roll on the end of each arm which is rotated so that each sheet is partially withdrawn from its pocket by a combination of the sweep of the arm and the rotation of the withdrawal roll. Also included is mechanism to advance the phase of the spider arms with respect to the phase of the pockets as they rotate. Thus, the spider arms are advanced and enter the pockets progressively sooner.

The apparatus for processing printed products includes receiving compartments that are arranged one behind the other in the direction of rotation and are moved, with their outer opening, past the discharge end of a belt conveyor. Arranged at the opening of each receiving compartment is a conveying-roller pair that is intended, upon moving past the discharge end, to grasp between its rollers one printed product that has been fed by the belt conveyor and to clamp printed product in the conveying gap. During further movement of the receiving compartment in the direction of rotation, the firmly clamped printed product is conveyed into the receiving compartment. This permits reliable introduction of the printed products into the receiving compartments, even if said printed products are fed at different spacings.

An apparatus for forming sheet material assemblages includes a plurality of pockets which are movable past a plurality of sheet material feeders. Each of the pockets includes a sheet material support which is movable between any one of a plurality of closed positions and an open condition. When the sheet material support is in a closed position, it blocks the lower end portion of the pocket and supports sheet material in the pocket. When the sheet material support is in the open condition, it is ineffective to block the lower portion of the pocket so that the sheet material assemblage can move out of the pocket through the lower end portion of the pocket. An actuator is provided to move the sheet material support from the open condition to a closed position. The sheet material support is connected with side portions of the pocket by a four bar linkage. A clutch assembly in the four bar linkage is operable from an engaged condition to a disengaged condition to release the sheet material support for movement from a closed position.

An apparatus is provided to sequentially form and transport sheet material assemblages to a receiving location. The apparatus includes a collating conveyor assembly which is operated to form the sheet material assemblages. A gripper conveyor assembly sequentially grips sheet material assemblages formed by the collating conveyor assembly and transports them to a receiving location. A receiving conveyor transports the sheet material assemblages from the receiving location. The gripper conveyor assembly includes a plurality of grippers which are sequentially moved beneath the collating conveyor assembly with the grippers fully open and facing upwardly. Sheet material assemblages are sequentially dropped from the collating conveyor assembly downwardly into the upwardly opening grippers. Each of the grippers in turn is closed to clampingly grip the sheet material assemblages. The grippers are then moved to the receiving location and opened with the grippers facing downwardly to drop the sheet material assemblages onto the receiving conveyor.

An improved stacking system for a collar is disclosed. The stacking system comprises a unique three-position off-set stacking apparatus that provides a third off-set stack position for improperly collated sets. The improperly collated sets are delivered to a third off-set position when a miss or a double feed is detected. Two stop members are moved to an inactive position in response to the double or miss detection, thus allowing a third stop member to provide a third off-set position for the improperly collated stack.
