A metallothermal reaction mixture consisting of a metal oxide, a metal that is more electronegative than the metal of the metal oxide and, optionally, further additives, the individual components being present in the form of small particles, is prepared in which at least 20% by weight of the metal oxide is present in the form of spherical or at least approximately spherical particles ranging in size from >0 to 3.0 mm. A stabilization and evening out of the reaction is achieved by the invention composition of the reaction mixture.

An alternative ironmaking process for simultaneously producing a highly metalized iron/steel product, coke from coal, an iron/steel product from an iron rich feedstock, and, optionally, energy using heat recovery. The simultaneous process is performed in the environment of a non-recovery or heat recovery coke oven. The iron rich feedstock is layered on top of a coal bed. The iron rich feedstock and coal bed are heated in the presence of a reducing gas to reduce the iron oxides of the iron rich feedstock into the iron/steel product and to devolatilize the coal into coke. After quenching the iron/steel product and coke, the iron/steel product is separated from the coke.

A thermite process for producing a pure metal or alloy by charging a reactor furnace with a mixture primarily containing a powdered metallic oxide and a reducing agent such as powdered aluminum, wherein a batch of the mixture of the starting materials is divided into a plurality of loading lots. The amount of heat generated by each of the loading lots of the starting materials is so regulated that the amount of heat generated by each loading lot differs from the amount of heat generated by other loading lots and the loading lots are sequentially arranged. The lots are loaded into a furnace to form layers for thermite reaction in an ascending order of heat generation.

Ink compositions for fabricating objects from planetary regoliths and objects fabricated from the ink compositions are provided. The objects include flexible, elastomeric objects and hard objects. Also provided are methods, including three-dimensional (3D) printing methods, for fabricating objects using the ink compositions. The ink compositions comprise a natural planetary regolith, such as an extraterrestrial regolith, a graded solvent system, and an elastomeric polymer binder.
