Disclosed are an anti-spalling blocking bar for a large cross-section coal gallery excavation work surface and a supporting method. The anti-spalling blocking bar comprises a blocking bar (1) and a support bar (7). Both a top portion of the blocking bar and an end of the support bar are provided with screw holes (2). A steel peg (5) is provided on an outer side of a bottom portion of the blocking bar. Locking teeth (6) is provided on an inner side of a mid-upper portion of the blocking bar, and a locking catch (8) is provided on one end of the support bar. The blocking bar and support bar are secured, using the screw hole and a screw bolt, to a temporary support device. After removing coal, a tool is used to hammer the blocking bar so as to wedge the steel peg thereof into a coalface (13). The locking catch of the support bar is held within the locking teeth to support a coal heading. After use, the blocking bar and support bar can be retrieved and suspended, using a hanging device, from the temporary support device. The anti-spalling blocking bar offers the advantages of easy installation, good support, reusability, convenient storage, and the like. The invention reduces the probability of personnel injury caused by coal loosening and falling from the heading, shortens the time for establishing coal heading support, and enhances a safety index and an excavation speed of a large cross-section coal gallery excavation work surface.

A new bolt head design is disclosed and claimed. The bolt head has a radius between the shaft and the first side of a washer which spreads the shaft load more evenly to the washer. A concave dome is located between the second side of the washer and the driver of the head. These elements more evenly distribute the load, increase the bolt head strength and help prevent the washer, shaft and washer driver interfaces from failing when the bolt is loaded either in a linear or non-linear fashion.

Roof bolt bearing plate and method are disclosed for use in underground mining operations. A dome-shaped roof bolt bearing plate and method support the roof in a mine. The bearing plate is round or elliptical different from conventional commercial roof support devices. No dangerous edges and corners protrude downward. A recessed center is lower than the outer rim. A thin outer rim conforms to roof irregularities. The roof bolt bearing plate and method have been found to provide important advantages over conventional commercial roof support devices, including (1) concealing the head of the roof bolt to a preferred degree, (2) conforming to the roof's irregularities which will cause causing the plate to remain tight, (3) provide readability so the installer can to determine the quality and integrity of installation and anchorage, and (4) compressing the lower strata of the mine roof, thereby and creating a beam like support for the upper layers of the mine roof.

A peripheral section at least partially circumscribes the bearing plate. In between the through hole and the peripheral section is a rib member area. The rib member area may include two rib members with a convex cross-section connected by a substantially linear surface member disposed between the two rib members, two or more concave ribs with a substantially linear surface member disposed between the two rib members, or two substantially linear surfaces connected by a convex rib member. A safety edge surrounds the square bearing plate. The safety edge may be a rolled edge, a looped edge, a folded edge, or another comparable edge. A method for providing secondary roof support in an underground mine such as to reduce the hazard of localized crumbling or deterioration of a mine roof. The apparatus generally comprises a slightly convex steel plate, crafted to cradle a roof bolt and which is supported by the base plate of the primary roof control system. The apparatus is utilized with standard primary roof bolt systems. By applying an upward pressure on the roof and effecting a larger coverage area for each roof bolt, the opportunity for drawrock separation to begin is reduced, and the exposure of the elements to drawrock strata in the vicinity of the bolt is eliminated. The method includes the step of utilizing the apparatus, with convex portion of the lateral plate facing upwards, before the placement of the base plate and roof bolt.

This invention is directed to a method of re-tightening or re-tensioning a roof bolt in an underground mine. Specifically, the method and apparatus claimed herein serves the purpose of enabling the operator to place tension between the head of a permanent, epoxy-secured, roof bolt and the base plate of a standard roof bolt system used to effect primary roof support in an underground mine. The method and apparatus have particular utility in mines in which drawrock or localized crumbling of shale of soft rock material is encountered as the first layer of material in the mine roof. The apparatus consists of a slotted screw member and slotted nut combination. A second embodiment of the apparatus is comprised of a slotted nut, slotted screw member and one or more slotted spacers to be oriented between the roof bolt head and base plate. The members are turned with the appropriate tightening tool such as to apply pressure between the base plate and roof bolt head, thereby re-tensioning the roof bolt. The method of the present invention includes the steps outlined above for placement and use of the apparatus in an underground mine.
