A mobile mine roof support assembly has three mine roof support units coupled together by a common transverse beam. Roller devices are mounted beneath the floor sills of the support units. The roller devices are spring biased away from their floor sills so that they can lift the floor sills away from the floor of a working when the assembly is to be moved. At least one roller device of each support unit is a steerable roller device so that the assembly can be steered round bends. Each steerable roller device is pivotally mounted on its floor sill about a vertical axis, and is provided with an associated steering device. The steerable roller devices are preferably coupled together by means of a common steering device.

The roof of an underground mine working which is newly exposed by a mining machine passing along a face of the working is supported by applying a flexible mat to the roof and underpinning the mat by self-advancing roof supports. A supply of mat is stored in a region which is already supported by the roof supports, is fed from the store in a first direction, and turned through a right-angle to extend along the newly exposed face. The device which turns the mat and applies it to the roof may have its vertical position controlled in accordance with the vertical position of a cutting cylinder of the mining machine.

A mine roof support assembly comprises a pair of adjacent mine roof support units and apparatus for guiding and aligning these units. Each of the units has a floor sill and telescopic props for bracing against the roof of a mine excavation. Shifting ram means are provided for displacing the units in the direction in which the working face advances. The guiding and aligning apparatus comprises two telescopic guide rods which are pivotally connected to the units. Each guide rod is constituted by a springless, non-hydraulic piston-and-cylinder device. The two guide rods are inclined at an acute angle to one another in such a way that, when the units are positioned side-by-side, one of the guide rods is completely retracted and its axis is perpendicular to the direction in which the units are displaced, and, when one of the units has been displaced by the shifting ram means relative to the other unit, the other guide rod is completely retracted.
