摘要:
Fasteners for fastening adjacent workpieces, and methods and apparatus for installing them. The fasteners include a shank having a head on one end. In one form, the other end may include a counterbore, with the outer end of the counterbore deflected inward to form an inward taper on the end of the shank, facilitating the entry of the shank into the hole in the work pieces. In another form, the other end of the shank may simply be formed with a chamfer. The fasteners also contain a stem having a head located adjacent the blind end of the shank. The stem head is pulled to expand and tightly fasten the shank to the workpieces. While applicable to both temporary fasteners and some permanent fasteners, configurations disclosed particularly for temporary fasteners can allow use of a high strength material for the shank, allowing temporary fastening of larger parts and/or with fewer temporary fasteners than with prior art temporary fasteners.

A composite material including a thermosetting resin and a fibrous filler material. The composite material is preferably fabricated by dry mixing the thermosetting resin, in powdered form, with the fibrous filler material, and applying an elevated pressure to the dry mixture. The thermosetting resin preferably cures while the mixture is subjected to the elevated pressure. The dry mixture may also be subjected to an elevated temperature. The hardened mass of composite material may be formed into the shape of a desired article of manufacture as an elevated pressure is applied thereto. Alternatively, an article of manufacture may be fabricated from the block of the composite material after formation of the block. The composite material will adhere to glues that have conventionally been used to adhere pieces of wood or wood-like material to one another. Thus, a dowel fabricated from the composite material may be used, in combination with a wood-working glue, to secure two pieces of wood or wood-like material together.

An anchor adapted for insertion in a hole through the wall. The wall includes inner and outer surfaces with the hole extending inwardly through the wall from the outer surface of the wall to the inner surface of the wall. The anchor comprises a head, a body, and a passage through the head and body into which a fastener, such as a screw, is adapted to be inserted. The passage has a central longitudinal axis. A surface on the head is engageable with the outer surface of the wall when the body of the anchor is inserted in the hole. At least one resiliently flexible leg extends axially of the body and terminates in a free end moveable generally radially inward and outward relative to the central axis of the body. The anchor also has a holder adjacent to the free end of the leg. The holder projects laterally outwardly from the leg. The leg is adapted to resiliently flex generally radially inwardly as the body is inserted in the hole to a point where the holder exits the hole on the inside surface of the wall. The leg, thereafter, is adapted to resiliently snap generally radially outwardly to a locking position where the holder extends beyond the hole and overlaps the inside surface of the wall to prevent the body from being pulled back through the hole. The distance between the wall-engaging surface of the head and the holder is essentially identical to the thickness of the wall so that when the holder is in the locking position the anchor cannot be moved axially with respect to the hole in the wall.
